The club signs a left-handed hitting 1B for organizational depth. Joe Staton is an athletic 1B who hasn't shown much in the way of power (he has never hit more than 10 HR's in any minor-league season), but is a top-of-the-order hitter who has hit for good average in the minors, coupled with the ability to take a walk. Staton also has excellent speed, and has stolen at least 35 bases in every season in the minors. Staton will be optioned to AAA.

To make room for Staton on the 40-man roster, the club designates RHP George Gerberman for assignment. Gerberman made only one major-league appearance in his career -- a start for the Cubs in which he pitched 5.1 innings and allowed 1 run on 3 hits, with 1 K and 5 BB's in earning a no-decision.

    OF John Sanders

    RHP George Gerberman (DFA)
    OF Ethan Blackaby (DFA)

    Probable Batting Order vs. RHP:

    Clines rf
    Giambi 1b
    Davis lf
    Ward 3b
    Williams cf
    Ellis c

    Probable Batting Order vs. LHP:
    Cruz 2b
    Clines rf
    Giambi 1b
    Davis lf
    Williams cf

    Davis lf
    Williams cf
    Ward 3b
    Green 1b
    Ellis c
    Basinski ss

The club signs a right-handed hitting outfielder to help fill out the bench. Leo Posada is primarily a corner OF, though he does have some limited experience in CF as well. Posada is essentially a right-handed hitting version of Don Dillard, and will join him in providing OF and PH depth at the end of the bench, with Larry Biittner and David Green focusing on backup 1B duties for now. In 1961, Posada's only season as a semi-regular in the big leagues, he led the AL in sacrifice flies with 12.

To make room for Posada on the 25-man active roster, the club options left-handed hitting C Vic Roznovsky to AAA. Carrying the light-hitting Roznovsky as a third catcher was a luxury that the club could no longer afford, and Joe Pignatano has firmly established himself as the #2 catcher on the roster.

To clear space for Posada on the 40-man roster, the club designates OF Ethan Blackaby for assignment. The club has a logjam of outfielders on the 40-man roster at the AAA level, so DFA'ing an OF makes sense. Two other players who were considered for the axe were Gale Wade and Luke Allen, but Wade's ability to play CF and Allen's ability to play 3B saves them from being chopped -- for now. In a separate transaction, the club announces that RHP Al Autry has cleared waivers and accepted outright assignment to the minors.

Re: Some Obituaries of Recently Deceased Major Leaguers Part Two

At the halfway point of the 2022 calendar year, the '22 club resembles an expansion roster. The rotation -- headlined by Joel Horlen and Ralph Terry, and supported by Odalis Perez, Dave Wickersham, and Ike Delock -- is not bad, and is probably the strongest part of the club. The bullpen has some solid veterans, but no real difference makers for the 8th and 9th innings. And the position players are mostly second-division starters, role players, and AAAA projects. The only legitimate All-Star level hitter on the roster is LF Tommy Davis. Any team facing the '22 club has to go into the game with the thought, "Do not let Tommy Davis beat us!"

Fixture for years at Dodger stadium. Crazy just the other day I was watching a old Reds-Dodger game and was wondering if he was still around. RIP.

In light of Mike Brito's passing, might it be of interest to expand the categories into dearly departed figures from management, scouting, et al? There's been managers/coaches included in the past, no? That said, could prove tedious adding front office and other categories. Thank you for doing this, Klu!
