The club adds to its organizational depth by signing an athletic outfielder who can play all three OF positions. Jack Reed was a three-sport athlete at the University of Mississippi, and started at safety for the Rebels in the 1953 Sugar Bowl vs. Georgia Tech. Reed played three seasons for the Yankees, serving primarily as a late-inning defensive replacement, and he became known as the "caddy" for oft-injured superstar CF Mickey Mantle. Reed played 222 games in three seasons for the Yankees, but managed only 144 PA's.

He was the oldest living ex-Red until his death two days ago. He was also living in Kingsport, Tn at the time of his death. I used to go to Kingsport all of the time when I was still living in Kentucky. I still have a sister and other relatives that live there.

The club signs a veteran right-handed pitcher with starting and relieving experience for organizational depth. Dave Hillman pitched eight seasons for four clubs as a spot starter and long reliever. His best seasons were 1958 and 1959 with the Cubs.

    1958: 4-8, 3.15 ERA, 31/16 G/GS, 125.2 IP, 1.297 WHIP
    1959: 8-11, 3.53 ERA, 39/24 G/GS, 191.0 IP, 1.157 WHIP

To make room for Hillman on the 40-man roster, the club designates LHP Pete Burnside for assignment.

Rudy Hernandez was a former original Senator and expansion Senator -- he was one of only three players to play for both clubs in consecutive seasons. Hernandez was also the first Dominican pitcher in MLB history -- preceding Juan Marichal by about two weeks.

The club signs an athletic right-handed relief pitcher to a minor-league contract for organizational depth. Rudy Hernandez was the first Dominican pitcher in MLB history, and the third Dominican player overall (after Ozzie Virgil, Sr. And Felipe Alou). Hernandez was a three-sport athlete at New York City's Commerce High School (Lou Gehrig's alma mater), and turned down a basketball scholarship to Seton Hall. Hernandez played one season in 1960 with the original Washington Senators, then played for the new Washington Senators in 1961 after being selected in the 1960 expansion draft from the Minnesota Twins (formerly the original Senators).

In a separate transaction, the club announces that C Vic Roznovsky has cleared waivers and accepted outright assignment to the minors.

Best spit ball pitcher of the 2nd half of the 20th century. He slipped his way into the HOF with that pitch. I saw him one time at a baseball card show in Tennessee. He was really tall was my impression of him. He was selling his autograph and I was never interested in paying for any of those so I never approached him. RIP Gaylord Perry.
