HOF Don Sutton. He was a good guy.

Random fact: Sutton was on the 1984 Brewers. With his death, every 1984 major league team has at least one deceased player. Ugh.

    Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal
RIP Don Sutton. Great pitcher, great personality. Condolences to Daron and the entire family.

Saddened to share that my dad passed away in his sleep last night. He worked as hard as anyone I’ve ever known and he treated those he encountered with great respect...and he took me to work a lot. For all these things, I am very grateful. Rest In Peace.

Re: Some Obituaries of Recently Deceased Major Leaguers Part Two

His last career game was against the Reds at Riverfront, a game I was at with my dad. Bo Diaz and Paul O’Neill were the last 2 to homer off him.
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

I read once that Don come from very humble beginnings. House he grew up in had dirt floors.
Like anyone here who grew up watching the big red machine you respected but hated all Dodgers.
I grew to like Sutton after he bashed Garvey in the papers.
Really liked him on those Brewers teams. Those teams were fun to watch in the 80s.
RIP Don 2021 is shaping up like it is going to suck like 2020 did.

That was one heck of a team stacked with hall of famers last year. No offence but here is hoping the 2021 team has added it's final member.

Don Sutton reportedly only lost one game while a high school pitcher in Clio, Alabama. Although he struck out 14 batters in a game against Foley High School, he lost to Foley's ace southpaw, who struck out 16. Although the Foley pitcher had contract offers from the Pirates, Astros and Yankees he never played pro baseball, opting instead to stick with football-He was Ken Stabler.
It would have been great to have attended the Sutton-Stabler pitching duel.

Re: Some Obituaries of Recently Deceased Major Leaguers Part Two

I read a couple of stories on Don Sutton. One I had heard of before, the other was news to me.
First the story I had forgotten. In the late 1970s Sutton and Steve Garvey reportedly got in a fight after Sutton told the media that Reggie Smith was the Dodgers best player but he didn't get the attention because he didn't smile all the time like Garvey [Sutton was correct].
The new story was a report that the A's almost signed Sutton during the same era [mid 1960s] that A's owner Charles O. Finley was signing Jim "Catfish" Hunter, Vida Blue, "Blue Moon" Odom, et al, as young pitchers. Whitey Herzog was trying to get Finley to sign Sutton but Finley balked at Sutton's demand for a $ 16,000 signing bonus. Knowing that Finley loved, and had created, nicknames, Herzog asked Sutton if he had a nickname, hoping that would get Finley to approve the signing. Sutton replied that Herzog could tell Finley that his nickname was "*****face" and he still wanted the $ 16,000. Finley still didn't approve.

Outstanding pitcher for the Dodgers and other teams. He was a model of consistency which got him into the HOF. He was the starting pitcher for the Dodgers in the July 1,1973 game that started the Reds comeback that season. Hal King homered off him on the 9th for the walk off win. RIP Don Sutton.

Damn, Hank Aaron. Maybe the greatest combination of player/person in baseball history.

He's one of the few men I'll pour one out for.

He's also the owner of my favorite statistic of all time: 3016

Three thousand and sixteen hits is the number of hits Hank Aaron has IF you take away all his home runs.
