The club adds an 11-time All-Star catcher with multiple Gold Gloves, and a solid hitter who can bat in the middle of the order. Crandall was a long-time teammate of Henry Aaron in Milwaukee, and he will now once again protect Aaron in the lineup. To make room for Crandall on the 25-man active roster, the club options C Norm Sherry to AAA, and to open up room on the 40-man roster, the club designates 2B Jim Snyder for assignment. (Snyder was one of a multitude of light-hitting middle infielders cluttering the 40-man roster.) In a procedural move, the club also outrighted LHP John LaRose and SS Al Naples to the minors. (Both had earlier been DFA'ed.)

So far this team has no chance against the 2020 team. 2020 had to be a record for most hall of famers passing in the same year.
How many of those deaths were tied to Covid?
The only positions where the 2021 team has the advantage are RF (Henry Aaron over Al Kaline in a very close battle between HOF'ers), and C (newly acquired Del Crandall big over Hal Smith).
The only other position that is relatively competitive is 1B, but Joe Cunningham doesn't quite have the numbers to top Bob Watson. Cunningham had a .403 career OBP, but had only occasional power. Watson's career OBP wasn't quite as good, but still very respectable at .364, and he had much more power.
No idea on whether COVID had anything to do with the number of deaths.

Never saw him play, but I did see him manage. He led the minor league Albuquerque Dukes to
championships in the 1980s. Good memories.

The club adds a backup 1B and pinch-hitter who is the rare player who bats right-handed and throws left-handed. To make room for Breeden on the 25-man roster, the club options lefty-hitting 1B/OF Joe Altobelli to AAA; the move leaves the club without a left-handed hitter on the bench, but Altobelli was a AAAA bat and the clear choice. To clear space on the 40-man roster, the club designates 1B Tom Robson for assignment. The acquisition of Breeden meant that there were now seven 1B's in the organization -- Cunningham, Breeden, Altobelli, Gile, Garrett, Johnson, and Robson. One of them had to go off the roster, and Robson became the odd man out. In a procedural move, the club also announced that RHP Hy Cohen had accepted outright assignment to the minors.
