The club signs a Gold Glove winner and former Rookie of the Year to strengthen CF, and a soft-tossing closer and five-time All-Star to bolster an already formidable bullpen. Bill Virdon, the 1955 NL ROY and 1962 Gold Glove winner, will take over the majority of the playing time in CF as the left-handed hitting half of a platoon with righty-hitting Johnny Groth.

The club also signs RHP Doug Jones, a five-time All-Star with over 300 career saves, to solidify the back end of the pen and serve as co-closer with Mike Marshall. Manager Tommy Lasorda's plan is to use Jones in the traditional ninth inning closer role, while Marshall will be his hammer to use at any time in a key situation. Once Marshall is in the game, he may pitch two or three innings, and possibly even finish the game.

To make room for Virdon and Jones on the 25-man active roster, the club options OF Billy Conigliaro and LHP Pedro Feliciano to AAA, and to open up space on the 40-man roster, the club designates INF/OF Pedro Gonzalez and RHP Tom Acker for assignment. The club announces that RHP Chuck Hartenstein has accepted outright assignment to the minors, and the club also announces the retirement of 2B Wayne Terwilliger, who is immediately named to Tommy Lasorda's coaching staff in a yet to be determined capacity.

With Billy Conigliaro being optioned, there are only six players remaining on the 25-man active roster who were on the initial 25-man roster back in March:

    RHP Don Sutton
    RHP Stan Williams
    LHP Juan Pizarro
    LHP Grant Jackson
    LHP Rheal Cormier
    OF Henry Aaron

Re: Some Obituaries of Recently Deceased Major Leaguers Part Two

Jerry Johnson was involved in the Dick Allen/Curt Flood trade between the Phillies and the Cardinals in which Flood refused to report.

To STL: Dick Allen, Cookie Rojas, and Jerry Johnson

To PHI: Curt Flood*, Byron Browne, Tim McCarver, and Joe Hoerner
(* - refused to report. Willie Montaņez and Jim Browning sent to complete the trade.)

Jerry Johnson was also the winning pitcher for the Blue Jays in the first game in franchise history, a 9-5 win on April 7, 1977 at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto vs. the White Sox. I remember having his baseball card as an eight-year-old collecting baseball cards for the first time in 1978. I always thought it looked like he was throwing the ball that had his position ("P") in it.

The club signs a right-handed relief pitcher and a left-handed starting pitcher to minor-league contracts to add to the club's organizational depth.

Jerry Johnson is a hard-throwing right-handed reliever with control issues who played 10 years in the majors, mainly with non-contenders. Johnson played only two seasons for clubs that had winning percentages over .500 -- the 1970 and 1971 Giants. Only twice did he have an ERA below 4.00 and a WHIP below 1.4 -- his rookie year with the Phillies in 1968 (when he was primarily a starter), and his career year with the Giants in 1971 (when he was the closer for the NL West champions and finished sixth in Cy Young balloting).

Duane Wilson is a left-handed starting pitcher who made only two career appearances (both starts) for the 1958 Red Sox, and pitched a total of 6⅓ innings.

The club also announces that C Tim Thompson has accepted outright assignment to the minors.

The club is very busy this weekend, making a flurry of moves at both the major-league and minor-league levels.

The club signs Don Demeter, a right-handed slugger who is comfortable playing both corner infield positions and all three outfield spots. Demeter will platoon with left-handed hitting 1B Eddie Robinson, playing LF vs. LHP with Joe Cunningham moving to his natural 1B position. To make room for Demeter on the 25-man active roster, the club options switch-hitting OF Richie Scheinblum to AAA.

The club also signs former All-Star and Cy Young Award-winning RHP LaMarr Hoyt, who somewhat surprisingly is optioned to AAA. However, there is quite a logjam in the rotation, and Hoyt is unable to crack the rotation of Don Sutton, J.R. Richard, Juan Pizarro, Mudcat Grant, and Stan Williams. There is some thought to moving either Pizarro, Grant, or Williams to the bullpen, but they do not want to lose Pizarro as their only LH starter. In the bullpen, Doug Jones, Mike Marshall, and Grant Jackson are safe, so the decision to make is whether to add Hoyt in place of Rheal Cormier or Dick Tidrow. Ultimately, the club decides to keep the two veteran relievers, and options Hoyt to AAA where he will headline the rotation. To make room for Hoyt and Demeter on the 40-man roster, the club designates RHP Joe Beckwith and OF Stan Palys for assignment.

The club also signs left-handed hitting corner OF Ricky Nelson to a minor-league contract, and announces that RHP Tom Acker and INF/OF Pedro Gonzalez have accepted outright assignment to the minors.
