That's a great article on Bart Johnson. I just remember his baseball cards from the 70's but never knew anything about him.

When you read about him going to Venezuela after a long season, and then he’s bad the next spring, it’s incredible how abused and downright stupid they were when it came to protecting their assets. Even 30 years ago, Alex Fernandez got to bigs the year he was drafted. Between college, minors, and majors, he threw 250 innings in his age 20 season. Just a different time. In some ways it was better, but also dumb.

Just an aside and dumb little thing I did when I was a kid. On this card of Johnson and a few others from the 72 Topps set,I drew beards on them with a pen. I remember doing that to a Carlton Fisk rookie card. I really regret that now. But, hey! I was dumb 9 year old kid.

I drew beards and Moustaches on the A's cards from that year since most of the players grew them during the season.

Matt Keough was the first player I watched who I knew to be the son of a player I had watched (Marty). I checked, and Marty's' still alive at 86. I was really too young to remember him, but for some reason i did. Maybe I just always conflated him with his brother, Joe.

His uncle, former Royals OF Joe Keough, died last September. His father, former Reds OF Marty Keough, is 86 years old.

Good for him; there are so many counterfeits out there.

5/2/2020...ex Yankee: Larry Gowell, age 72. Last AL pitcher to get a hit before the DH was implemented. The ball he hit is in the HOF. https://ripbaseball.com/2020/05/13/o...ell-1948-2020/ Attachment 16069
