most bizarre win in reds history

My vote is when Joe Nuxhall dueled Ken Johnson and Johnson pitched a no hitter and the reds won 1-0 because of an error by Nellie Fox

The two that immediately come to my mind would be Junior's inside the park walk off in 2001 and Adam Dunn's walk off grand slam in 2006.

Billy Bate’s game winning hit in Game 2 of the ‘90 World Series.

The Reds have to get Marty Brennaman to issue an over the air plea for Tom Browning to return to the ballpark. He had left because his wife was in labor and Browning thought he wouldn’t pitch till game 3. A surreal moment in a surreal series.

Actually, it was Joe Oliver with the game-winning hit to score Billy Bates, who had gotten an infield single off Dennis Eckersley earlier in the inning.

Tim McCarver was making the same plea on the CBS television broadcast.

For me "unusual" would probably mean a huge comeback due the odds against it. The 7 run ninth against the Indians was a doozy. I also recall a 6 run comeback in the 70s, a game I was at with my dad on a week night.

My answer wouldn't be complete if it did not include the most bizarre loss the Reds ever endured. My vote goes to Rick Wise's no hitter, in which he faced 28 batter and hit 2 dingers. I was there and even as a six year old I knew it was special. He got a standing ovation from the Reds hometown crowd.

Hal Kings three run homer to in 9th to beat the Dodgers on July 1,1973. It sparked an amazing comeback by the Reds to win the NL West.

Game 4 of the 90 WS where you lose both Davis and Hatcher to injuries may not of been bizarre but a memorable win for sure.

Another memorable win was Opening Day in Houston 1990 when Larkin hit a 3run triple in extra innings to start the 9 game win streak. https://www.baseball-reference.com/b...99004090.shtml

Btw I enjoy topics like this from Bruce Berenyi and not the goofy Bill Dawley, Dave Van Gorder, Wade Rowden type posts. They got old quick.

May 24th, 2005 is one of my most memorable ones.

Randy Keisler, at the time a 29-year-old journeyman, made his Cincinnati Reds debut by pitching a shutout 13th and 14th inning against the Nationals. He then also picked up a walk-off single in the bottom of the 14th. https://www.baseball-reference.com/b...00505240.shtml

June 6, 2017: Scooter Gennett does something no Reds player, not Bench or Foster, even, has done before. I'm still not sure I saw what I thought I saw. My guess is that the pitchers couldn't see Scooter because he was wearing camo and just soft-tossed the ball over the plate. After all, the Reds scored 13 runs on the night.

Can't find the game time but I seem to remember it being a day game?

It was an afternoon game. It's on the left side of the page below the box score and game stats.

I was at a game very late 70s or early 80s. Dodgers was up like 9-1. Reds won when like 13 straight batters reached base. It was all singles or walks. I remember there was no extra base hits at all. All this happened in the bottom of the. 8th so no walk off. Meaning less late season game but still was cool to see live.

Outside of the game I was at above. It has to be the walkoff slam against Cleveland. I was at another game in 08 and Dunn hit a walkoff I believe it was a 2 run HR to beat cleveland. So he had at least a couple walkoffs against Cleveland.

Re: most bizarre win in reds history

I nominate 1975 World Series Game 2. The Big Red Machine had been held in check by the Boston pitching and defense for the entirety of Game 1 and innings 1-8 of Game 2. They were about to fall behind zero games to two as they trailed 1-2 in the top of the ninth, with two outs, Bench at third, and Concepcion at the plate. Concepcion singled to tie the game, stole second but just barely, and then scored the go-ahead run on Griffey's double. Rawly Eastwick recorded three fly-outs in the ninth to close it out.

For 17 consecutive innings, the batted balls found their ways into the gloves of the opponent. And then, suddenly and bizarrely, a few of them found the grass.
