    Share Your Favorite Baseball Quotes

"For all its gentility, its almost leisurely pace, baseball is violence under wraps." - Willie Mays
"In our sundown perambulations of late through the outer parts of Brooklyn, we have observed several parties of youngsters playing 'base,' a certain game of ball. We wish such sights were more common among us...The game of ball is glorious..." -Walt Whitman, 1846

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it’s a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good and that could be again.”

“You know what the difference between hitting .250 and .300 is? It’s 25 hits. Twenty-five hits in 500 at-bats is 50 points, OK? There’s six months in a season. That’s about 25 weeks. That means if you get just one extra flare a week, just one, a gork, a ground ball — a ground ball with eyes! — you get a dying quail, just one more dying quail a week and you’re in Yankee Stadium." -- Crash Davis (Bull Durham)

Btw, this is why guys like Daniel Dorn and Roberto Petagine were never going to make it. They weren't ever going to get that one extra hit a week in the majors.

Re: Share Your Favorite Baseball Quotes

People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.

I don't want to play golf. When I hit a ball, I want someone else to go chase it.

A great hitter isn't born, he's made. He's made out of practice, fault correction, and confidence.

Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball.

    Rogers Hornsby.

Re: Share Your Favorite Baseball Quotes

    1. Pitchers did me a favor when they knocked me down. It made me more determined. I wouldn't let that pitcher get me out. They say you can't hit if you're on your back, but I didn't hit on my back. I got up.

    2. The baselines belongs to the runner, and whenever I was running the bases, I always slid hard. I wanted infielders to have that instant's hesitation about coming across the bag at second or about standing in there awaiting a throw to make a tag. There are only 27 outs in a ballgame, and it was my job to save one for my team every time I possibly could.

    3. There's absolutely no way you can go barreling into second and dump a guy on a double play, like you should do, when you've been fraternizing with him before a game.

    4. If the guys on the bench were as good as the guys you have out there, they'd be out there in first place.

    5. I always tried to do the best. I knew I couldn't always be the best, but I tried to be.
