MLB Skipping the 2020 Draft?

I heard a doctor talking and his guess was that the first wave of Corona would die down around late June or early July and that the government would try to get the economy started again. Then there would be a second wave of Corona in the fall when the weather got cooler. Is that an accurate position? Who knows, but you have to figure people are planning around that. So that's around when the draft is normally held. It still makes sense to have the draft. Sure, there will be less info, but lets face it, after the first round, it's a crap shoot anyhow, and most of the first round picks are known by now .. sure a couple guys might rise up.. but it's rare for an unknown to suddenly become a first round draft pick.. Most of the "risers" were going to be drafted anyhow.

Really, the only reason not to have the draft is to save money, as Doug said.. Not a good reason in my opinion, but money rules, so it may happen.

Sports leagues need to make some news while they're not playing games. Drafts are one of the few things they can do. They could defer the bonuses until some point in the future or cut the draft to a smaller size, but they should figure out a way to do it. Otherwise the only news coming out of the league is "nothing to see here."

bumping the draft back a month or two (or three or four) might be the solution. canceling the draft will not be the solution, imo.

I mean I definitely think that is accurate and well documented, but if that merits another shut down, we essentially will just be shut down forever to save lives from various high-virus time illnesses. I think the draft needs to proceed as planned - audience was never a big thing for MLB regardless.

Sounds like they are working on a package dealing with service time, salaries, 2020 draft.

They are talking about a July draft which would be shortened to fewer rounds. This is consistent with the plan under discussion to shorten the draft in connection with sweeping reduction of the minor leagues.

Presumably a July draft assumes scouting would resume, say, in May or June. I think that’s optimistic, but hope it can happen, it will mean that the current virus situation is resolving by then.

The NCAA has decided to give players in Spring sports an extra year of eligibility:

This will give baseball players the option to go back to school if they don't like their options in the draft. In the big picture of this virus and the country, this issue of drafted players isn't even a blip on the radar. They'll be fine
