In 1934, Red Barber saw his first major league baseball game. He also called the game from the stands in Crosley Field. The HOF announcer's first broadcasting gig was with the Cincinnati Reds. He worked for the club from 1934 to 1938, before he moved behind the mic for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Before Red came along (and while he was there) the Reds had another announcer on a different station (WFBE) named Harry Hartman, who was VERY popular, he was the common man announcer and was known for shouting out things like SOCKO! and was credited with being the first to say going, going, gone.

He also was about 5'6 and 300 pounds and would take his shirt off at the games and get all excited.

He died young, Red left and eventually Hoyt took the mic and folks forgot about Harry

Harry also produced a set of Reds cards in 1941 that celebrated the 1940 WS champs. Pretty neat set with, I think, 34 cards, including 1 of Hartman.

There have only been 44 games in modern MLB history where a team had 27 or more hits. The Reds have done it twice. In 1999 in Colorado and 1940 at Crosley Field

In those games only 3 players hit for the cycle, Hack Wilson 6/23/30, Keith Hernandez 7/4/1985 & Harry Craft 6/9/40

So how did this “Phantom Menace” turn out?

Well, it was the first Star Wars movie in 16 years, so it had that going for it -- but I was mildly disappointed. I wasn't really interested in a 9-year-old Darth Vader, and evidently the Force is actually a bacterial infection. Also, there was this really annoying alien with a pseudo-Jamaican accent. Parts of it were good, though, and it did have the feel of a George Lucas film.
