Why Covid-19 is different for men and women

..."One of the most striking differences that has emerged so far is in the death rates of men and women.

In the US, for example, twice as many men have been dying from the virus as women. Similarly, 69% of all coronavirus deaths across Western Europe have been male. Similar patterns have been seen in China and elsewhere.
One team of researchers, led by Anna Purdie at University College London, is charting the gender differences in various countries and working to find out more about why.
For now, the reason is still unclear.

One theory is that women’s immune response to the virus is stronger, says Philip Goulder, professor of immunology at the University of Oxford. “The immune response throughout life to vaccines and infections is typically more aggressive and more effective in females compared to males,” he says.

This is partly down to the fact that women have two X chromosomes, whereas men have only one – which is important when it comes a coronavirus. “In particular, the protein by which viruses such as coronavirus are sensed is encoded on the X chromosome,” says Goulder. “As a result, this protein is expressed at twice the dose on many immune cells in females compared to males, and the immune response to coronavirus is therefore amplified in females.”

Another possibility is that the difference is down to gender-based lifestyle choices. “There are important behavioural differences between the sexes, for example in smoking, which affect the level of pre-existing disease such as heart disease, chronic lung disease and cancer,” says Goulder. “These have a huge impact on the outcome from infections such as coronavirus.

“The sex differential in smoking is especially marked in some countries such as China, where 50% of men smoke, compared to 5% in women.”

I'd be very surprised if Cincy held their traditional festivals.

Just read something very interesting: The very first Ohio State Fair was canceled because of a cholera epidemic.

Taste was postponed until July 4th weekend, I would be very surprised if that happens.

Just read that the bundesliga is in training right now, they are trying to decide when to start the season up.

I think sports without fans will happen, probably sooner than the doomsday scenarios.

I think we will get to a point this summer where the worry isn't about smaller groups of people. They just want to limit large scale public gatherings until they know more.

That may be true of people who haven't had their income impacted by all of this, but even the most loyal of patrons aren't going to come back spending money when their income is gone, or greatly diminished. And that's not going to be a small percentage of the population.

Some will stay away for a time for fear of it starting to spread again. That may be a small percentage of people. Others will stay away because they don't have the cash to spend. Between both of these, I don't see how most restaurants/bars don't see well more than a 10% drop.

The idea behind limiting group size is that if you test positive, you have a better idea of who you were around and those people can isolate and/or get a test. If you go to a football game, that's basically impossible. But even doing small group type stuff is still something that requires a huge ramp up in testing from what we have now.

Really? Over a month ago it happened with the Jazz and they tested the entire team. Heck I think the entire NBA has been tested. I don't think that will be an issue.
