    Oddities

Willie Montanez was traded six out of seven seasons. From 1975-1981, he got dealt every year but 1978.

In 2018, Oliver Drake pitched for five different teams in one season.

Ken Griffey, Junior played in four decades. His father did not.

Darrell Porter played 15 full seasons as a starting catcher in the big leagues. He enjoyed three very good offensive seasons then a bad one in Milwaukee. He did the same thing in Kansas City-- three good seasons and a poor one. He did the same in St. Louis (but the Cardinals kept him). He finished his career with three more good offensive seasons. Is that consistent or inconsistent?

Johnny Bench stole home twice. Carlton Fisk did it three times.

How good was last season's Yankee offense? 15 players had an OPS+ above league average. 15!

    Oddities

Porter began his bad season in KC by checking himself into rehab

    From Wikipedia:

"During spring training in 1980, former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Don Newcombe paid a visit to the Kansas City clubhouse. He asked the players ten questions, the point of which being if a player answered three or more of the questions with an affirmation, the player might have a problem with drugs or alcohol. Porter affirmed all ten questions and checked himself into a rehabilitation center, admitting he had abused alcohol, cocaine, Quaaludes, and marijuana."

    He was a mess

Oddity: Dave Kingman began the 1977 season as a New York Met, they traded him to San Diego, three months later they put him on waivers and the Angels picked him up, a week later they waved and he ended up his season as a New York Yankee

Trea Turner played half a season in the San Diego minor league system after he had been traded to Washington.

One of the oddities/rumors going around which most people think is true is the story behind Rollie Fingers mustache. If you haven't heard it, heres how it goes:

At the time A's owner paid Rollie for growing and keeping his now iconic mustache and would give him bonus money based on how he kept it up, even paying for the wax.

The problem with this story is that it is complete BS. I had the honor of having lunch with Rollie a few years back(when the Reds hosted the ASG) and I asked him about the rumor...

"Hell no, do you really think Finley's cheap ass would pay his players for anything? I grew it because I liked it and other players followed suit".

The Reds are the only non expansion team to not have a third baseman who played in 1000 games, they however are the only MLB team to have two SS who appeared in over 2000 games and four who appeared in 1000 games

Nothing makes me feel older than seeing the list and realizing that I, as well as many of us here, have seen 5 of those players play that position for a 100 plus years old franchise.

It's really a position they never could fill, most teams have those, but this is ridiculous. Especially if you think about #7 being a famous answer on a trivia question (Who was the 3rd baseman when Tinkers to Evers to Chance played)

    Between Groh and Rose

    Code:
    GAMES G
    1 Tony Perez 760
    2 Grady Hatton 729
    3 Bobby Adams 563
    4 Chuck Dressen 559
    5 Lew Riggs 537
    6 Steve Mesner 398
    7 Bill Werber 397
    8 Babe Pinelli 307
    9 Eddie Kasko 291
    10 Don Hoak 261
#4 Dressen, more famous as a manager and a coach than a player... wore the uniform of the Yankees/Giants/Dodgers before the Mets.. the only man

#8 More famous as a umpire, was behind the plate for Larsen's perfect game in 1956, as a Red he and other "Catholics" kinda pissed off Eddie Roush as he so obviously went on about in "Glory of their Times"

Then you ask... who the heck is Steve Mesner?

Wartime player, finished up his career in the PCL

    Just a crazy bad group

One of my all-time favorite nicknames. He specialized in what the kids and fans of Letterkenny would call "chirping." Supposedly he would be player-third base coach and move up and down the line yelling insults at the opposing pitcher. My understanding is that they invented the coach's box to restrain his activities.

Correct on Arlie. He used to run down the line during the at bat and scream at the batter often getting within ten yards of him
