    The government hasn’t been very good at IT functions over the years. I see the mistakes they make and shake my head. Rookies....

    Yeah, it's a catch 22. If you are really good at what you do, you'll either go out on your own or get snatched up in the private sector, especially in technical fields. There are some exceptions of course, such as NASA, but I've met some of the programmers and DBAs at the local base and just shake my head.

    My agency is using 12 year old technology for VPN access. It's because this was someone's fever dream 12 years ago, just came available 2 years ago, and nobody stopped to think if they should do it this way. It's for security, but even the CIA and DHS don't do it in this convoluted manner.

    OTOH, The NWS had rather robust computing. Nothing that would seem antiquated in today's world, unless you count some modeling code that still uses fortran77 libraries.
