    COVID-19, Part 3, the re-opening phase

    "
    New Seasons Market
will become the first major grocery chain in Portland to require all customers to wear face coverings.

The upscale Portland grocery chain announced Friday that it would require all individuals entering its stores, including staff, vendors and shoppers to wear protective face coverings as an additional safety measure amid the COVID-19 crisis."

    T hread: COVID-19 Thread Part 3

Over 50,000 deaths nationwide as of today.

It seems the models have been rather accurate on a national basis, though scattered state by state. Which makes sense. The larger the pool of data, the less noise.

    Re: COVID-19, Part 3, the re-opening phase

"Oregon health officials may need 600 more workers to perform coronavirus contact tracing under a plan being developed for Gov. Kate Brown’s “Reopening Oregon” framework.

The tracers would be largely tasked with performing time-consuming detective work to help slow the spread of coronavirus when Brown and counties begin lifting restrictions to restart sectors of the economy."

Much remains unknown about the plan and how it would better protect Oregonians from coronavirus in the months ahead. State and public health officials attempted to perform contact tracing after the pandemic officially arrived Feb. 28 in Oregon but quickly became overwhelmed by the volume of new infections.

National health experts see increased testing to detect the coronavirus and thorough contact tracing as the country’s best bet to reopen shuttered businesses."

"Old Spaghetti Factory, the Portland-based restaurant chain known for its inexpensive three-course meals and trolley dining cars, will reopen its 42 United States locations for takeout and delivery today, the company announced in a press release."

The one time I was in Cincinnati in '95, I ate several times at the waterfront location. Of course, it's no longer there (under water after the really bad flood that also flooded Riverfront stadium and that whole area?) Seemed like the area was a ghost town at the time leading to it's closure anyway before urban-renewal planning changed the area. Seemed like the money was being spent in the suburbs at the time. Too bad they couldn't have held on.

I've had three customers call me and say they are going to start opening again the week after next (these are manufacturers). They will follow the typical protocols (face masks, face shields when under six feet, temperature checks) and have made their own PPE. So, things are moving forward.

Still a week left in April. 61,000 by august first seems really low.
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!

Oh, God, yes. It will take months before they actually tally those whod died directly and indirectly from the beginning of this.

Yeah, it’s going to pass that number in the next week or so. The overall deaths caused by this virus, directly or indirectly, will likely reach the horrible numbers that were predicted weeks ago....100-220k. The deaths in the aftermath of this economic collapse are going to be really bad too. Depressing to think about.

It's been a little over a decade since the world experienced its last pandemic, the 2009 H1N1 swine flu. Between the spring of 2009 and the spring of 2010, the virus infected as many as 1.4 billion people across the globe and killed between 151,700 and 575,400 people, according to the Centers for Disease Protection and Control. Now, the world is in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, caused by a novel coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2.

They are about 2 years ahead of where they would normally be in terms of vaccine development. Now, the volunteers participating are putting themselves at great risk, but because so many restrictions have been discarded a vaccine might be found quicker than anyone thought possible.

Oxford says they might have one ready by September:

If everything would go perfect it would be nice to dream of a World Series in November in front of fans.

It would be nice. But it's a tremendous hurdle to overcome.

Me either, at least not quickly.

Even if one is around by September, it would take many months to get it produced and administered to enough people to allow big stadium events.

Getting a vaccine developed for the billions needed to take it will take six months alone AFTER it gets approved by all the bodies necessary. We are looking at next March at the earliest. Can't see a scenario where mass gatherings will be allowed next Winter during flu season, and not a chance it will happen in the Fall. Don't even know how they think they are going to have NFL games next Winter. There are a minimum of 1000 people gathered together with players, personnel, television crews amd media. The NBA could pull it off, but not the NFL.
