Reds are doing work in the International Market

Sorry if already posted. I like it. I understand to an extent it's kind of buying a lottery ticket when you're talking signing 16 year olds from places like the DR, but it's not my money and it can be a smart risk if done well.

    Baseball America @BaseballAmerica

The Reds are expected to give out two of the 20 or so biggest bonuses on the international market this year.

Both are to Dominican-born outfield prospects.

    Below is Ariel Amonte.

Find both + scouting reports here:

I'm hardly one to say we shouldn't be repeating work, because at this point without baseball for so long we all are - but this all was first reported back in September. This is super old news that's just "new" again because rankings have been slightly updated.

It's good that the Reds are back in the game of spending money internationally again. From 2009-2014 they basically sat out much of the big signing types, not inking a single 7-figure deal in that span for players who weren't Cuban professionals (Chapman and Iglesias) and got MLB deals instead of signing minor league deals with bonuses. Sadly enough, the biggest bonus the Reds handed out in that 2009-2014 stretch was to a pitcher, who literally never threw a single pitch in a game before retiring. He had multiple arm injuries that kept him off of the mound over a stretch of years. $825,000 bonus. But in 2015 they finally handed out another 7-figure bonus (not going so well at this point), and then in the 2016 period is when they went big with the three Cuban guys (Gutierrez, Rodriguez, and Garcia). Last year they picked up two big 7-figure guys who haven't played yet.

Ariel Almonte is one of the would-be signings.

From MLB video on the Dominican slugger:

Bat-first corner OF with potential to be plus hitter with plus power.
Chance to be middle of the order hitter
    Drives ball to all fields
Real understanding of the strike zone and off-speed pitches
Advanced feel with little swing-and-miss in his game.

According to MLB, he's 6'1" and 160 lbs.

    Who is the other guy?

According to BA, it is Malvin Valdez, plus-plus runner with plus arm. Raw otherwise.

Also, BA has Almonte at 6' 4'' and 190.
