I don’t know what the right thing to do is, but I’ve seen quite a few baseball/football official/unofficial workouts recently. Most athletes are competitors and I think many realize a championship could be won by the most prepared, not necessarily “the best” team this year.

On average sans payroll there was $200M in revenue to spend. We have no idea to which teams that money went to or where that money went. Did it go back into the club? Did it go into the owners pockets?

How much money is baseball going to make this season?
Net worth absolutely impacts revenue because that value opens up so many options and avenues. These owners may have a down year but that net worth will carry them through and they will continue to reap the rewards when it is all said and done. The players have a finite amount of years to play and get theirs.

And everyone in this thread claiming that owners are going to toss money back to the players is living in a dream world. America is capitalism and capitalism only cares about its labor enough to extract as much value as possible while paying as little as possible. As a business owner that knows a large number of other business owners, most don't give a damn about how their employees are compensated. It is incredibly rare that anyone does, luckily our business is not run that way and the owners didn't take a dime for 3+ years so we could pay our employees as much as was feasible.

The owners can make these work, I don't doubt that it might hurt but they can absolutely make it work.

Owners and players both need to see the forest for the trees here. The 94 strike struck a huge blow to MLBs dominance of American sports and it has been declining ever since. Ths NFL and NBA are ru ning circles around them.

They have a huge opportunity teed up here that could pay exponential dividends down the road by taking advantage of the current void, and yet, here we are.

As usual, its not players v. owners. It's certain players v. other players v. certain owners v. other owners. And there is a Commissioner and a Union Rep who have no history with each other. Its not a good mix-- unless someone gets some sanity, we may not see baseball for a long time.

    Not the whole thing.

When players asked to see the books, they were denied.

This has happened every time the owners have asked for a salary cap.

    You know this. Why lie?
Where did I lie? I merely said that the owners offered a salary cap based upon a percentage of revenues and that is true. Your point of opening up the books is tangent to my point

Because if you are talking the last few months - nope didn't happen.

The owners floated a balloon about it through a leak about what they were privately considering. Got hit with such storm winds that they never put it on the table.

And the thing the owners never will come clean about is the TV money. They say it isn't baseball revenue. But when you see what they sold BAM to Disney for (a couple billion) you know there is a whole bunch of money there. And it is generated by players that take the field.
When? I believe it was 1994

Either side can make it work. I do think there's a limit to how much money the owners will accept losing. After a certain point they'll say fine, let's cancel the season.

Cut off your nose to spite your face.

No post season mean more money going out the door when the networks come calling

That works both ways though. Both sides will be cutting off their nose to spite their face

I didn’t get much support for this theory earlier, but this offer further convinces me that the owners are trying to break the union, or set the players up for 2022 negotiations.

After all the crap this pandemic has done to this nation and its citizens, it is a crying shame that these two sides can't come to an agreement to get baseball going. If they don't play this year I'm finished with MLB which is by far my favorite sports league and has been since 1979. I came back after 1981 and 1994, but I'm older and wiser now. I'll spend my money and time on something besides these selfish bastards.

You didn't get much support 'cause it's silly. What sports union has been busted in your lifetime? What sports union is the strongest? Breaking up unions aren't common in sports and if it was to be done, MLBPA would be the least likely. This is tin foil hat territory here
