Now, now hold on. As a member of the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and teammate of his my first season in Cincinnati and of yours in my last, I think I'm qualified to say that neither of you were going to make anybody forget Jim Maloney.

Pretty good article about the 1981 team.

In all fairness my arm was dead by the WS but I always took the ball since Wayne and both Jim’s had even less than nothing left.

Correction. The 3 Jim ‘s had nothing left.

Well, Maloney and Merritt I can see. But McGlothlin was pitching his normal game, bad..

Instead I’d giving the first half winner an automatic playoff spot, the playoffs should have been the 2nd half winner vs. The overall winner.

Allows teams to still have a chance and rewards teams with the best record. Too simple for MLB to figure out.

It’s the playoffs, anyone can win.

The difference between teams in a short season is marginal at best.

And 2 great starters can take you far in the playoffs.

The original Sigmund and the Sea Monster Star had a great start to 1970 but like everyone else seemed to be worn out or dead armed by August/September. What the hell was Larry Shepard teaching these guys? Simpson threw about 400 innings going back to Winter Ball.

I knew Mel well. He was highly regarded but lacked confidence. He was very useful in getting Andy Kosovo and Phil Gagliano in 1973 so we honor his contributions in perpetuity.

Yeah, I guess he wasn't as bad as I thought. Just looked up his stats. Now that I looked things over, Sparky made a huge mistake by not using you in a 5 man rotation the whole season after Maloney went down. You didn't get in the rotation until Simpson's arm gave out. It's mind boggling now as we finished 14.5 games ahead of the Dodgers and certainly could have afforded a 5 man rotation.

Bowie Kuhn was in charge, so it’s not surprising he couldn’t figure out a simple and fair solution.
