    Re: Dayton Flyers Basketball 2020-2021

Flyers split their first two games. In their opener, they beat a veteran Eastern Illinois team in a hard-fought game. Yesterday, they lost to SMU on a last second shot.

The loss to SMU ended a 21-game-winniing streak, the longest in the country, and was a rough reminder that this will be a very different season for Dayton. Ibi Watson has looked like a star thus far, averaging 19.5 on .725 TS%. While Watson was expected to step his game up, Jalen Crutcher, thought to be one of the better plays in the A-10, has looked pedestrian. He's playing primarily off-the-ball and has looked frustrated.

The reality though is Jordy Tshimanga and Chase Johnson are not Obi Toppin, Ryan Mikesell and Trey Landers. Toppin was, of course, a star and Mikesell and Landers were tremendous role players, something the 20-21 squad is desperately lacking. They have zero depth and are relying on a walk-on to spell both Chatman and Crutcher. Grant appears to have exactly no confidence in his bench, giving scant minutes to Sissoko and Nwokeji. Over two games, the bench has produced six points.

Nobody expected a repeat of last season, and there were undoubtedly going to be growing pains. Here's hoping the teams grows and evolves from here. Northern Kentucky and Ben Howland's Mississippi State ahead this week.

Transfer Elijah Weaver can play now. Much needed depth.

Welp, sank to 1-2 in conference tonight and have now lost to perennial bottom-feeders, La Salle and Fordham.

Starting to think last year might have been a bit of a fluke.

My parents weren't even alive when Dayton last lost to La Salle and Fordham in the same season lol.

Losing Toppin/Landers/Mikesell obviously hurt a lot. They're playing in slow motion compared to last year. Amzil has been a bright spot. Need to see a lot more from the other freshman, though.

Not enough talent left from last year's squad?

Hard to say at this point. Things feel pretty broken despite having three very talented senior guards. I figured they'd carry the load this season while they figured out the rest of the rotation, but it's been pretty messy from the get-go.

Of course there's been lots of roster movement; some COVID absences, some injuries, the disappearance of their talented PF, the midseason arrival of a star Finnish PF, but it doesn't really explain what's all going on. The team feels rudderless. The offense has no fluidity. They aren't sharing the ball like they did last year. They're playing at a snail's pace (338th in the country per KenPom's adjusted tempo).

Frankly, it's hard to watch. Hope Grant figures something out soon. It's clear he's frustrated as well (they were on the floor practicing sets during halftime last night).

In think there's a lot of talent on this team, just that most of it is raw and inexperienced and not familiar with each other.....mixed in with a few veterans. I expect a pretty competitive team come conference tournament time. Don't count the Flyers out quite yet.

    Re: Dayton Flyers Basketball 2020-2021

Got absolutely housed by VCU last night. Was reminiscent of when solid UD teams would play UC and just get their doors blown off by the Bearcats' aggressiveness. Grant's got a finesse system, but boy it was over in the first five minutes. It should be noted that UD gave VCU a very similar beatdown last year.

The more I see of this team, the more I think there's a dearth of talent. Last year, only nine guys played in more than 20 games. Only three of those guys are playing right now, and one of those three is Jordy Tshimanga who averaged 9.8 mpg last year. Filling those minutes are guys like Zimi Nwokeji, R.J. Blakney and Koby Brea. They may turn out to be good players, but they ain't ready, and it shows.

Last year was the exception. They had a big class of junior transfers become eligible just as Toppin and Crutcher were ready to shine. For the program to stabilize, they need talent and continuity. Banking on four big college transfers showing up and gelling every few seasons isn't a sustainable recipe for success. The next recruiting class is promising, and the current freshmen could certainly develop, but as much as anything they need these guys to stick around for three or four years. It's the only way a place like Dayton can elevate the program.

Next year is going to say a lot about the future of the program. Cant put too much stock into this weird season. However, losses like last night really make you reconsider the coaching staff. I don’t care if you’re Kentucky, Duke, Toledo, or Dayton - you should never get completely embarrassed like that by a conference rival when you are evenly matched talent wise. Never.

Beat the best team in the league, St. Bonaventure on their own court, to close out the regular season.

Just a real screwy season for Dayton. Lost to the three worst teams in the league. Played pretty well against everyone else not named VCU. Had they beaten the three worst teams, I believe they'd have won the conference (no idea how they handle these uneven schedules). Instead, they finished in the middle of the pack.

Started leaning on some of the freshmen front court down the stretch, and all of Amzil, Blakney and Nwokeji had their moments. Can't say I'm sold on any of them, but there were certainly flashes. They'll have to grow up fast, because they've about the sum-total of what they'll have in the front court next year.

Huge class coming in next year, including a top 35 player, Scoochie Smith's brother and Lynn Greer's son. They'll be crazy young next year

First, onto the A10 tournament. They have the horses to win it. It wouldn't surprise if they got blasted in their first game either.
