I was fortunate enough to attend a game with Lonnie back when the Carolina Mudcats were the AA team in the Reds .org. We used to PM back and forth not long after I joined the forum here. He was interested in seeing Lynchburg, (High A Reds)in Winston-Salem as well as a game in Zebulon (Mudcats). He was in W-S one night and Zebulon the next. I bought two tickets for the Zebulon game and will cherish the evening we spent chatting at that game. He was such a nice person. It has been several years ago now that we messaged but I will always be grateful for having met him and being in his company. I am very sad to read of his passing. He was a very very special person.

Most books I read I put away after I'm done with them. I usually re-read them months/years later but "Sixty feet Six inches"and "Moneyball" are probably the only books that I read again immediately after I finished the first time because they were so fascinating. Wherler was a great writer. He will be missed.

I just finished reading I had a Hammer. Wheeler collaborated with Henry Aaron to write Aaron's autobiography. It was written 1991. Very good book. Aaron was a true pioneer in breaking the color barrier in baseball. He along with two others were the first blacks to play in the old SALLY league. I'm sure he had as tough as anyone playing in that league at the time. Aaron also had excerpts of some letters he received when he was in pursuit of Ruth's record. Just really appalling what people would write. During that time the FBI assigned him a guard that traveled with him to keep watch over anyone that came around him. Aaron was really courageous just to keep gong with all the threats he and his family were receiving everyday at that time. Wheeler did a great job of getting Aaron to talk about all of this and putting it in a very interesting format. I would highly recommend his book to any baseball fan.

Just catching up on this thread and surprised to learn that mace = Lonnie. I pitched in on the Minor League Player of the Day threads for a couple years and traded DMs with him a few times. Those threads were his baby and he was very passionate about keeping them going every year at a certain standard. He gave me a compliment on my writing one time, which was nice to hear but means a lot more to me now I know who he was. I always just tried to emulate mace's style on those posts as I admired his wit, the readability of his posts, and his turn of phrases.
I suggest we try to keep the MiLB Player of the Day tradition going in mace's honor this year.

It's publication day for a book I've been waiting a long time to read the late, great Lonnie Wheeler's biography of Cool Papa Bell,
@NLBMuseumKC and @baseballhall legend.
Lonnie's the best pure writer I've ever known and I can't wait to dive into this: https://bit.ly/3d9RLij
