    Re: Day 2 MLB Draft

I get why Casey Martin fell, but still might take a chance in the second round, assuming they think they can bring the strikeouts down. If they pick Blaze Jordan (and he might be a nice heir apparent to Votto), they need to get him to tone down his name, maybe to something like Firebringer James or Wolf Blitzer. Cole Wilcox is a guy I'd looked at earlier and liked but had forgotten.

Go hard, draft Jared Kelley, see if a 1.5 million dollars doesn't change his mind. Punt the last two rounds and sign him for first round money if need be.

If there's a draft to go for quality over quantity, this is it.

I'm sure someone else will do this before we do.

I saw a few post in yesterday's thread referring to a "chalk pick." I had not heard this before. What does it mean?

Basically that they are picking who everyone is expecting them to pick. Joe Burrow was the "chalk" pick for the bengals at #1.

If Kelley isn't there, or he's entirely unsignable, then going Lonsway at 48 and Mace at 65 (if there) would, in my mind, be a successful day. Reach a bit for Burleson in the 3rd round and I'd be ecstatic.

Tanner Witt is the player I want most with the Reds' second pick.

    Re: Day 2 MLB Draft

At least three of these guys should be available with the Reds' 2nd round pick:

HS RHP Jared Kelley (Signability issues? Perhaps. Worth a gamble? Absolutely. Three above average pitches and a history of domination. Could be in an MLB rotation by 21.)
UT RHP Clayton Beeter and Texas A&M RHP JT Ginn (Superior stuff to Kelley and older, but two TJ surgeries later, Beeter's a massive gamble and JT Ginn is on the shelf. Upside galore here.)
UGA RHP Cole Wilcox (The midway point between Kelley and Beeter/ Ginn, he's an SEC veteran who has great stuff, but struggles to pitch.)
HS RHP Tanner Witt (Great stuff, upside, but may be a tough sign. Could take a while to develop.)
HS RHP Carson Montgomery (Polished starter with mid 90s fastball and a good slurve. Change-up is key-- some think it'll develop into an above average offering. If so, he's a good pick. Not yet 18.)
HS RHP Masyn Winn (60+ name, with solid arsenal of pitches and make-up concerns. Can also play SS. Athletic but slight, with high spin rates.)
FSU RHP CJ Van Eyk (Curveball specialist with low 90s fastball, makings of a good change. Intriguing option if you're looking for a different option.)
Dallas Baptist LHP Burl Carraway (Relief arm who could help this year. Southpaw with great off-speed pitch and good fastball.)

HS LH CF/RF Jace Bohrofen (Above average hit tool with five tools. High floor. Make-up is good. May be hard to sign out of OU commitment.)
LSU OF Daniel Cabrera (SEC OF with pop and good plate discipline. Quick bat, but relegated to corners. 55 FV hit tool, according to Fangraphs' Eric BOARD.)
Arkansas SS Casey Martin (Poor plate discipline and a questionable hit tool. Why pick him? 70+ speed and as much upside as anyone in the draft. Big gamble on your development folks.)
HS RH 3B Drew Bowser (CA kid who has good hit tool, pop, and a cannon for an arm. Super slow, so he'll have to stick at 3B. Let's draft all the 3B, cool?)
Ole Miss SS Anthony Servideo (Smooth fielder who walks more than he K's. Showed promise in abbreviated beginning to season after horrible Cape Cod. Might be better as a lower pick, but a pick of need, perhaps?)
HS CF Pete Halpin (Upside, speed, and loud contact. Should be able to stick in CF. Relatively high floor as defensive caddy and high ceiling.)

3rd round pick, I'd gamble on:

    - Any of the above (at least one should still be there.)
    - UF RHP Tommy Mace (55 FV on FB, CH, SL and an SEC veteran. Throws strikes. We know Reds liked him before.)
    - RH RH hitter Blaze Jordan (55 hit tool, great BP power, but likely limited to 1B/ DH. Super young for draft. I could see the argument for gambling on his stick in the 2nd round and would be overjoyed with him as a 3rd rounder.)
    - Miami SS Freddy Zamora (Torn ACL limits him, as do make-up issues. Willing to gamble on talent and 50 hit tool in 3rd round. Should stick at SS.)
    - HS RF Dylan Crews (Upside and 55 hit tool enough for me to gamble. Tickled to get him here. Really tough sign, supposedly.)

The term comes from sports betting. Back in the old days when bookies used chalkboards to update odds. The favorite got more action, and more odds updates, so that eventually it looked just like chalk smears. So chalk became a slang term for "heavy favorite".

So a chalk pick is just an expected favorite outcome.
