Day 2 MLB Draft

I like the Mac Wainwright pick. The other ones from yesterday seem a little meh, we’ll see. Bonnin seems like he could be a major league reliever. Roa seems a little Wyatt Strahany to me. I have renewed faith in our pitching coaches, but like many others I would’ve preferred Wilcox.

That said, high upside HS hitting and college pitching seemed the right way to approach this draft, and that’s what we did. Not much to be upset about here.

You gotta think that Boddy will take a guy like Boyle and tinker with his mechanics in an attempt to tame the wildness. Or at least develop into "effective" wildness.

Yes. Reds have put much effort into pitching coaching and training. They have an opportunity with three good new arms.

Jackson Miller, according to C. Trent, was signed by Sean Buckley, former Reds farmhand and son of erstwhile scouting director Chris Buckley, who has served as a Reds scout since 2016.

Miller graduated from J.W. Mitchell in the Tampa Bay area. Buckley went to high school in Tampa, before attending St. Petersburg College and the University of South Florida, both in the Tampa Bay area.

Miller struck me as a weird pick. Drafted as a catcher with next to no experience as a catcher and doesn't seem to have the bat projection of other Reds position players. Makes me wonder if Buckley stuck his neck out on this one. I would assume growing up in a baseball family in the area, he'd be about as plugged in as anyone. Miller's dad also runs a baseball facility in the area. Here's hoping Buckley isn't out here doing favors for friends.

Ultimately, it won't mean much, but I thought it was an interesting note.

Miller graduated from J.W. Mitchell in the Tampa Bay area. Buckley went to high school in Tampa, before attending St. Petersburg College and the University of South Florida, both in the Tampa Bay area.

Miller struck me as a weird pick. Drafted as a catcher with next to no experience as a catcher and doesn't seem to have the bat projection of other Reds position players. Makes me wonder if Buckley stuck his neck out on this one. I would assume growing up in a baseball family in the area, he'd be about as plugged in as anyone. Miller's dad also runs a baseball facility in the area. Here's hoping Buckley isn't out here doing favors for friends.

Same with me. I was turned off by the last regime's picking what I referred to as "all round gym rats". Guys that played MI or CF with no big tools. THey all seemd to end up mediocre at best. (and their insistence on HS pitchers).

New regime seems to be focusing on college pitchers, and players with big offensive upside. (mostly HS).

Miller seems like the anomaly. The all round talent, coaches kid, whose family literally owns a gym. I hope he works because at that spot we passed on some pretty good guys.

Also, spot-on on the dirtbags and the gamers. Got pretty sick of watching a bunch of try-hards flame out.

One day during his sophomore year, Miller wore his t-shirt backwards to school. Everyone tried to mock him for it. Miller responded that it wasn't his fault if everyone is a boring conformist. Now everyone at J.W. Mitchell High wears their shirts backwards. Jackson Miller was born to lead.

At least that's the story I'm sticking to.

The Reds nabbed a strong high school left-handed hitter in the first round with Austin Hendrick, then got another solid one at No. 65 overall. While Hendrick brings power, Miller brings a more solid, contact-oriented approach, one that generates line drives, and there could be more pop to come. He’s more athletic than most catchers, and that agility should help him behind the plate.
