Various teams approach to UDFA portion of Draft

Per MLB Trade rumors and links to articles from there.

Miami intends to sign no more than 10.

    Mariners expect to sign 5-10

Giants didn't establish a number but said they are working several approaches - Local guys who might be Giants fans, and having players and coaches who know kids make the contacts/offers.

Kansas City has a green light to sign as many as they want.

I thought there was lobbying going on right now, but apparently clubs were not allowed to contact players between end of draft and 9 AM EDT Sunday.

Hope the Reds approach is more like the Royals.

Saw this on Twitter because of a local Jax U guy. An outfit called FlatGround Pitching has a database that guys who want to be considered can "advertise" their skills and availability. Kyle Boddy indicated he'd be looking at it.

Certainly interesting. Wouldn't have expected them to the "big winners."

Since the money is the same everywhere, it might simply be about where players feel they will get more opportunity to play.

If I was a prospect the Royals ans "have not" teams like them is exactly where I would go.

The Royals kept and paid all their minor leaguers. And they approached their NDFA prospects with the idea of "this is who we are".

I agree that a place that has not much at the MLB level is enticing, especially to higher ranked older prospects, the current climate and how KC reacted to it certainly was forward thinking.

So far, there have been about twice as many pitchers signed as offensive players. 12 catchers lead the way, among offensive players-- double 1B signed. OF are next, with middle infielders nearly completely absent.

    Interesting the focus on pitching.

Cincinnati has a type of undrafted free agent pitcher, apparently. Big K numbers. Little control. They don't seem to care about production at all. Steve Branche last pitched in the 2018 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (which I'd never heard of before). I assume injuries?

Don't think that's accurate. He pitched in 2019 and 2020. He was the Liberty League pitcher of the year in 2019. https://ritathletics.com/sports/base...-branche/14834

Columbia River grad Alex McGarry makes it official, signs with Cincinnati Reds

McGarry, who graduated last week with a degree in business administration, said it was his plan all along to leave Oregon State after the 2020 season.
“Early on, some draft boards had me being drafted between the eighth and 10th rounds,” McGarry said. “So I planned to play the season, get my degree at Oregon State and then make the move to the next level. And I wasn’t going to let COVID change that.”

“I had three teams interested in me, but the Reds showed the most interest,” McGarry said. “And we had it put into the contract that the Reds would pay for me to pursue a master’s degree after my playing career is over. That’s one hell of a backup plan. So it sort of became a no-brainer after that.”
McGarry said he’s received no instruction from the Reds about what comes next. The Reds have Rookie League affiliates in Billings, Mont., Greeneville, Tenn., as well as Class A teams in Dayton, Ohio and Daytona, Fla.

Is the consensus that the Royals have the best class of UDFAs? Seems like the Phillies also got quite a haul. Cubs, Padres, and Yanks did fairly well too, at least if we're going off rankings.
