    Commercial ads on player uniforms?

    https://news.sportslogos.net/2020/06...rms-right-now/

According to a Tweet from Major League ballplayer turned reporter Trevor Plouffe on Wednesday evening, “[MLB] owners have proposed being able to sell commercial advertisements on uniforms for 2020 and 2021”, adding that “it’s in the proposal [to MLBPA to start the 2020 season], which as many have reported is not a done deal”.

If the players get a piece of that pie, perhaps.

Do the owners get a piece of the pie when a current player does a commercial?

Major League baseball licenses use of its logo, team logos, and uniforms, so if the player appears in the commercial as being associated with baseball, then yes, the owners get a cut.

IIRC, the union gets a cut of the player's likeness is used under certain circumstances...not sure if that includes an association with Baseball or not.

The NBA did it, and the game seems to have not been destroyed. So why not?

Jerseys and hats have had advertising for New Era, Majestic and now Nike for quite a while now. Shoes have the logo of that company on there.

I think there's a difference between a trademark and an ad.

Not really. Nike puts that swoosh on their shoes and gear for a reason and it's not just cause it's their trademark.

Since there are no teams on the moon, I guess South Korea's far enough from Cincinnati to satisfy me.

Think of all the cool Reds uniforms throughout history.

You know what? Bring it on. The patchwork advertisement era for uniforms probably suits us well. Just another nail in baseball's coffin anyway, albeit a small one.

I feel like one day I'm going to turn the game on, look at the empty stands, robot umps, uniforms covered in advertisements, wondering whether it'll be a strikeout, walk, or homerun... and just change the channel instead.
