Ryan Zimmerman and Joe Ross have elected to opt out of the 2020 season, per sources.

Zimmerman's mother has MS and he has a newborn. FWIW he was on a 1year $2M contract. Looks like he may retire as that was what he said he would do if he didn't resign with the Nats. He was likely to be a backup 1B/DH for the Nats.

Joe Ross's dad is a pediatrician and his mom is an ER nurse. Interesting, I wonder if their experience during this pandemic influenced his decisions. Ross was in line to be the Nats fifth starter.

Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Christian Yelich should really consider opting out this year. For safety sake.

Josh Hader's hair is a likely breeding ground for Covid-19 too.

I can’t link to it now but wow what an Instagram post he put up to announce it. He leaves 15 million on the table. He put his money where his mouth is - much respect.

Isn't his salary this year actually 5.54 million because of the prorated salary? Not questioning what he did just wondering about the money

I definitely agree with your post now good for him to put his family first. Any athlete who does that this year definitely deserve some credit for putting their loved one first

So we are at 4 players and 2 coaches (not by their choice necessarily) so far.

Taking the under on 5 is looking kind of sketchy at the moment.

Big picture issues aside (which I commend him for) I appreciated his zinger at expensive travel ball.

Long Twitter thread from Thomas Harding on this topic inspired by Desmond’s post.

My uncle was a longtime scout for the Texas Rangers. He always found it amusing that families in the states paid so much money for their kid to "maybe" be half as good as a 14 year old Dominican prospect that grew up in abject poverty.

By the way, the above anecdote is the rule rather than the exception.
