    Re: Best 80’s Song

Because there was no way I could resist breaking the rule about only naming one song....here are some others besides Wonderland, that meant a lot to me at different times in that decade or are just so good, in no particular order:

    Chariots of Fire- Vangelis
How Soon is Now- the Smiths
    Brilliant Disguise- Springsteen
    Cath- The Bluebells
Rain in the Summertime- The Alarm
Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now- The Smiths
    Chance- Big Country
    Fisherman's Blues- The Waterboys
    Theme from Harry's Game- Clannad
    One Step Up-- Springsteen
Welcome to the Terrordome-- Public Enemy
    Bring the Noise- Public Enemy
    Only the Lonely- the Motels
    One Small Day- Ultravox
    America- Neil Diamond
    Just a Shadow- Big Country
    I will Follow- U2
    Relax- Frankie Goes to Holloywood
    Roulette- Springsteen

I know I am leaving off so many catchy songs that take me back to that period. ex Come on Eileen- Dexys Midnight Runners
(we will ignore my Air Supply phase in 7th grade)

I saw Squeeze in Norfolk, VA in '93 during the Some Fantastic Place album tour. It was Paul Carrack's second stint with them. Great show. A young musician by the name of Sheryl Crow opened up for them.

I love the first 4-5 R.E.M. albums as whole pieces without a specific "stand out" song, otherwise I'd have voted for something by them for this.

When I saw Roger Waters Pros and Con tour Carrick was his keyboard player. In the middle of the show he had a break and sat down at a table and had a glass of something, he showed a old Floyd video See Emily Play and toasted Sid, then Carrick did Tempted.

    It was awesome

After seeing some other posts, I already want to change my answer, ha. It's a tie between Morrissey's Everyday Is Like Sunday and the Cure's Just Like Heaven. If I have to pick one, I'll go with Just Like Heaven.

If you are going there, "Thriller" needs to be there even if you don't personally like it, but for the understanding of what it meant to '80's music and culture. You couldn't go anywhere without seeing its effect (Madonna and Michael did this more than any others).

I'm not a big 80s guy, mostly because of the instrumentation. The drums sound thin. Unimaginative use of synths. Not enough bottom end. But I maintain that this band and Midge Ure's songwriting is criminally underappreciated in America. I'd like it better without the weedly-weedly-wee keyboard choices and more live drums over the dated 80s ones. But great melodies. I'm sure somewhere in Britain there's a good bar band that playing these songs with drum set, organ, bass, and limited-effects guitars. And I bet it sounds amazing.

Great song. That whole 1979-1982 period was very good. Of course thanks to them and Bowie we got Spandau And Duran Duran.

I never understood what this very catchy song is about. “Oh my sentimental friend, we’ll walk as one again”? Any insight?

I don't know. I've never heard them talk about it specifically. They strike me as one of those bands that goes for intentional opacity with their lyrics, for better or worse. Imagery over meaning. They've admitted lying about the meaning of "Vienna" in early interviews, for example>
