If Sims and/or Mahle can go four innings to a Starters' five, doesn't that shorten our bullpen needs by two, three or even four players?

What I'd hate to see is for Mahle or Sims get pulled after throwing three good innings for one inning of Iglesias, but I do believe that it exactly what we will see (for various reasons).

You thinking a Starter plus Mahle/Sims will be enough to complete a bunch of games without other relief help?

I’d guess there’ll be relatively few games that Reds will complete with only two “tandem starters” pitching.

I like the idea of using Mahle and Sims this way but, in the rough and tumble, I think Reds will still need a full slate of relievers.

Everyone's effectiveness is going to be very random.

Long relief in 2020 means 2 innings. Maybe three when they get crazy. I'm guessing for the first month or so, starters won't go 5 consistently either. Just not enough "Spring" to get them to that level.

I don't think you can say this with any certainty. First start, and each starter's gone at least three.

I'm OK with those choices as well. I just think they need three or four of them to begin the season.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more info on Aquino. Not only is he down (up?) at Prasco, but even though we've had 3 or 4 days of bringing guys up, he hasn't been one of theme.

I am pretty certain that he didn't use up any of the Reds MVRs.

Yes. A promising outcome could go down the tubes in a hurry if they don't have a short leash with Iglesias. They owe him absolutely nothing. He has earned zero respect. He should be replaced as a Closer immediately (2nd Blown Save and/or Loss before he gets his 5th Save) if he can't get the job done.

He could turn a promising season into a disaster before he's faced 27 Plate Appearances.

The quickest way to improving this bullpen would be adding a solid lefty reliever. Can’t imagine Reds need to trade Winker in that deal. I’m talking solid veteran, not expensive big shot pitcher.

Add a LH reliever, move Cody Reed from #2 lefty to #3 in the pen. I don’t think that would require a trade of a main starting player.

Right now, not sure there will be any player moves all things considered, so we wait and watch for Reds to finalize roster.

Agreed. Honestly, I think just adding a solid middle reliever would be a big improvement. Someone to help carry Lorenzen's load, so he doesn't have to pitch almost every game.
At least a guy that we would feel comfortable coming in with a 1 run deficit and keeping it close.

Early last season, Lorenzen and Garrett were overused hard (in my opinion) due to lack of
other reliable options. Let's hope that doesn't happen again. Hopefully Strop or someone else
emerges. I agree with you, this is not a championship bullpen.
