#Reds should have their 30-man roster close to set by this time next week, David Bell said.

Re: Reds’ 60-man player pool for 2020

With rosters being expanded to 30 to start the season and the quick buildup to the regular season, it would be easy to assume that those four extra spots would go to pitchers.

Not so fast, Reds manager David Bell says.

“No, not necessarily,” Bell said. “That hasn’t been determined yet. There’s an argument for doing the opposite of that just because even though we have position players who will play every day, regardless of who the opposing pitcher, is you can create good matchups. We have the three-batter minimum rule, which creates pinch-hitting opportunities.”

Relief pitchers have to face three batters or finish an inning, so teams will likely pinch-hit for left-handed hitters when facing a lefty specialist.

“If you can have more position players, in some ways that can allow you to pull out all the stops to try to win a game,” Bell said. “Pitching is obviously very important. We have to make sure we’re covered every day there.

Love the thinking. We're one of the few teams who can take advantage of this because of our quality starting depth and relief pitchers who can go multiple innings.

And, it sure seems like a good way to get Aquino onto the roster and a defensive SS.

The strategy will be interesting. The 3 batter minimum will result in a whole new set of strategic decisions. I think Bell will look to balance handed-ness in filling out the 30 man roster. I also think we will see more intentional walks, perhaps the unintentional-intentional kind.

My take on Bell’s comments is that he sees more than 14 pitchers as diminishing returns. The 15th and 16th pitchers aren’t getting regular work. You have enough guys to mop up without them. And you can always dig into the 60-man player pool for fresh arms.

I expect they’ll go with 15, would be surprised if they carry more.

Sounds like he’d prefer the extra role players on the position player side allowing pinch hitting, pinch running, maybe defensive replacements. Bell likes to use his bench, I agree, disliked the four man bench on 25-man rosters.

Re: Reds’ 60-man player pool for 2020

With a 30-man Opening Day roster, Bell wasn’t expecting to flood his team with a lot of extra pitching, and he prefers more offense. He envisioned a potential roster with 16 position players and 14 pitchers.

“Even though we have position players who will play every day, regardless of who the opposing pitcher is, you can create good matchups. We have the three-batter-minimum rule, which creates pinch-hitting opportunities,” Bell said. “If you can have more position players, in some way, that can allow you to pull out all the stops to try to win a game.”

Great video where Moose talks about the free agency process and this coming year. You can tell just how genuinely excited he is to be a part of this team. Can't wait to see what he can do.

I'd bet Reds Fans have watched more replays of game 6 of the 75 Series than they have watched of game 7.

Game 6 was a great game.
    We lost.

    DD added to 60 man

    https://twitter.com/Reds/status/1283...695994880?s=19

I think it makes sense now why the Reds kept their 60 man at 57 players. Is there another that is gonna be added soon?

BTW it's confirmed DD had Covid. He said he had very few symptoms and feels lucky.
    Interview from him about it

    https://www.mlb.com/reds/news/derek-...ds-player-pool

"It was a lot longer than I expected it to be, but it’s two negative saliva tests, then an antibody test and a full physician’s clearance: EKG, echocardiogram, respiratory, normal procedure." Wow that's a lot more and thorough testing to get back to play than I would have expected. Kudos to the MLB for that protocol.
