    Reds storylines heading into camp

Maybe this article can stir some discussion

CINCINNATI -- When the Reds were last together in Goodyear, Ariz., in mid-March, there were some roster battles percolating and decisions to be made. Then everything stopped as the rest of Spring Training was canceled and baseball was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

About 3 1/2 months later, it’s as though some of those issues have been frozen in time. When workouts resume on Friday, it will be the first chance for the players, manager David Bell, the coaches and the front office to be together again. Evaluations of fitness will dominate the early days before the team gets down to the business of choosing the active roster.

Here are some refreshed Reds storylines as the club prepares for the abbreviated regular season.

    1. Who fits in the outfield puzzle?
    2. Bullpen decisions more complex, critical
    3. Injury issues
    4. How do prospects figure into the equation?

Maybe we can use this as a "Summer Camp" or "Spring Training 2.0" thread.

Here's a short video of some players at GABP.

I recognize everyone except whoever is pitching about halfway thru the video.

Not to be obvious, bit Votto's back has to stay healthy.

I'm hoping the extended layoff has helped with that.

You can watch the full squad workout live, if you're into that sort of thing.

On Reds home page as well. Feed is quite good BTW, it jumps around and has closeups. I just wish there was sound...nothing like hearing the crack of the bat or pop of the glove.

The Cincinnati Reds held their first team workout since spring training was called off because of COVID-19 in March, trying to pull together again while keeping safely distant.

“It does not feel normal,” manager David Bell said Friday before the workout. “I wish it did. In a lot of ways, we feel prepared, for sure. But you’re kind of going into the great unknown. There’s some excitement to that. There’s some anxiety to it.”

I watched a lot of the feed today and to be honest I didn't see a lot of social distancing. I actually saw Senzel spit on the field and none of the coaches on the field were wearing masks.

Since the Indians look like they are bowing to social justice pressure, will the Reds be next ?

    https://www.todayifoundout.com/index...ond-red-scare/

"In any event, the present day Cincinnati Reds’ name was inspired by the Cincinnati Red Stockings, even though they have no real connection with the Red Stockings other than being from the same town and initially naming themselves the same thing (the Cincinnati Red Stockings). However, when this latter organization moved from the American Association to the National League, they shortened the name to just “Reds”.

This name stuck until 1953 when the association of the term “Reds” with communism caused the Reds to change their name to the “Redlegs” in order to avoid the social stigma. Further, for a four year stretch from 1956-1960, the name “Reds” was removed from the team’s logo and no longer appeared on the team’s uniforms. Despite the continued use of the changed logo, the name “Cincinnati Reds” was restored after the 1958 season.

If you’re wondering where the term “Redlegs” came from, this was once a derogatory term used to refer to a specific group of poor white people living on various islands in the Caribbean (generally originally from Ireland and Scotland). They were also commonly known as “white slaves”. Some were in fact actual white slaves, having been taken by press gangs and transported to Barbados to be sold. Others were simply indentured servants, agreeing to work more or less as slaves for a time in exchange for transportation. It’s estimated around 50,000 of these Redlegs were transported from Ireland alone during the mid-17th century.

So, apparently, the Reds preferred to associate themselves with slavery, rather than communism. Although, this is marginally fitting given the reserve clause that was in place at the time, which forbid a player from being able to play for any team but the one who owned the rights to him when his last contract expired, unless he was released or traded. This resulted in teams getting to set salaries nearly as low as they pleased and to completely control the careers of their baseball players. The only real negotiating tactic the players had at their disposal was to refuse to play baseball at all, which resulted in them not getting paid anything when they didn’t play and obviously wasn’t a good tactic for players who weren’t stars."

Or does slavery of people not count if they are from the British Isles

Re: Reds storylines heading into camp

These 5 teams are now World Series contenders

    4) Reds

The strangest thing about the Reds’ aggressive offseason, as impressive as it was, involved trying to figure out where in the heck they were going to play everybody. Mike Moustakas! Nick Castellanos! Shogo Akiyama! Heck, Freddy Galvis! (Though he did show up in August.) It was as if the Reds thought they were playing in the league with the DH. Well, it turns out: They are! Suddenly, the Reds don’t have to play with Castellanos and Moustakas in the field at the same time. Having the DH helps the Reds accentuate their greatest strength during a shortened season: A lineup full of sluggers, pretty much top-to-bottom. (They don’t even have room for Aristides Aquino on the roster.)

The Reds' pitching has considerable upside, but the Reds are mostly going to try to bash their way to victories, which, considering how hard this tight schedule is going to be for pitchers, is a rather optimal strategy. Having an extra lineup spot for another of those bashers plays into the Reds’ hands perfectly.
