The writer is neither stubborn nor unable to adapt. Like many fans, he simply sees all the differences between baseball today and baseball fifty years ago, and decided that he liked baseball better as it was fifty years ago. Not a thing wrong with that.

I am older and fight these feelings all the time. Its normal, as time pssses, the whole world, not just baseball, changes so its unrecognizable from the world I grew up in. Knowing this is a matter of personal perception makes it easier for me to challenge myself to continue to learn, and be part of this " brave new world". WAR and VORP are 2 of the easier things to learn about and embrace....
99% of all numbers only tell 33% of the story so when looking at the numbers remember that numbers is plural...

I couldn’t have said it better. Well said.

Like everything in life, it all evolves. Change is constant. It’s best to embrace change because it really doesn’t matter what I or you or anyone think. Time and change inexorably moves forward and there isn’t really a damn thing you can do about it. Evaluate it in the context of your life’s experiences and exercise good judgement, but don’t be closed to new ideas and new things. I remember reading about Pete Palmer and trying to extol to fellow fans that Joe Morgan’s walks were a good thing.

I think the soul of the game is still there. It’s just changed.

Wait, this is not a reference to a 1970s Robin Askwith sex comedy romp?

1970 (50 years ago) Pitchers allowed 8.7 hits per 9.
    2019 Pitchers allowed 8.7 hits per 9.

    1970 Pitchers walked 3.5 per 9.
    2019 Pitchers walked 3.3 per 9.

    1970 Teams averaged 80 SB.
    2019 Teams averaged 76 SB.

I guess it's the romanticizing of "the way the game was played 50 years ago" that always gets me. Wanting guys to quit trying to hit the ball hard so they can hit a routine grounder or can of corn instead of striking out just rings hollow to me.
