Explains not going the full five.

    It was embarrassing to watch

Let's look at the game logs.

First 7 games: 4 were good or respectable for a guy coming off an injury and the Reds were pitching starved.
    First 11 games: 6 were good/respectable.
Last 3 starts were awful, he was pitching hurt (perhaps before the last 3 games)

So yes, when Bronson was bad, he was bad, but he was respectable in about half of his first 11 starts.
I am not claiming he was good, but if he maintained the level of performance he had in the first 11 starts, it
would have been a great move, since he was signed for minimum salary on a pitching starved team. Of course, it would have been better to sign a pitcher that was good , but that costs money, and the Reds only want to spend money once or twice every 5-10 years, not during a rebuilding cycle.

Yes, his overall ERA was bad, because when he was bad, he was awful. But
he had enough decent starts mixed in to not be embarrassing.
[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob

    Wrong

    He was a laughingstock.

    3 QS in 14 games

    7.35 ERA

    1.6 WHIP

    -1.5 WAR

Your defense of him is bordering on delusion

Finally, Castillo is going to have the option to get paid soon, and I would want as much goodwill going into that negotiation as possible.

    The 2017 Reds were embarrassing.

Bronson Arroyo (who I love) in 2017 was an embarrassment as to being included on an MLB staff...don't sugarcoat his results.

It just begs the question, is an embarrassment of a pitcher on an embarrassment of a team such an outrage...I don't know.

It’s not an opinion. Arroyo was awful.

He had some guys missing by 2 feet on his breaking balls. Has a presence when he's on the mound too, and pitches like it. Or maybe it was the Dietrich half buttoned shirt-no undershirt combo, idk.

Anyone still upset we gave up Shed Long for him?

And that contract looks very nice too. This year at 10 mill (adjusted), 2021 and 2022 at 10.1 mill, and an option for 2023 at 12 mill. And 2023 is at age 33 so should still be in prime.

Anyone who is/was upset about Shed Long, should now identify themselves and prepare for their public shaming.

Lol, it is the perfect example of fans overvaluing their fringe prospects. I have been guilty of it myself from time-to-time.

I would trade Shed Long for Sonny Gray 100 times out of a 100.

But Shed Long is the starting 2B for the Mariners this year and last year in 42 games put up 111 RC+.

He was not a fringe prospect. Not even close. He is now a MLB starter.
