Ferguson Jenkins. For some reason, I loved a pitcher who could hit, and Fergie could hit. I was a Reds fan, but Fergie was the player I followed as closely as I could.

Vada Pinson at 10 but Art Shamsky took over at 13 when my dad and I witnessed his 3 homer game against the Pirates. 2 homers were in extras off Billy O'Dell and Elroy Face. He then hit another 2 days later for 4 hrs in 4 abs. I was crushed when he was traded to the Mets for Bob freakun Johnson the next year. I was almost a Mets fan but my granma and my dad talked me out of that insanity by taking me to more games at Crosley. I got over it but I was convinced Art was gonna be a huge star.
99% of all numbers only tell 33% of the story so when looking at the numbers remember that numbers is plural...

I’d say Leo Cardenas when I was 10. I’m not sure why. I think it was his Caribbean flair and passion.
When I was 12, it turned to Deron Johnson. He had a big 130 RBI season in 1965 which impressed me then. Also, his baseball card showed this big square jaw and flinty glare that I tried to imitate in Little League.

Pete Rose. I loved the way he hustled and played hard.

Turned 10 in '68. It was a close run thing between Rose & Perez for me.

In 1971, I had a Pete Rose glove, and a Pete Rose bat. Without a doubt he was my favorite player at 10 years old. I think the whole family were Charlie Hustle fans at the time.

Johnny Bench, by leaps and bounds.
I'm not a system player. I am a system.

When I was 12 in my final year of Little League, I had a red Pete Rose glove. It's long gone, but I do still have a couple of 33" Pete Rose Louisville Slugger bats I bought when I was about age 17. I used both of them in baseball games until one of them got cracked; at that point I "retired" them both.
