Chris Welsh said on game tonight that he thinks Reds will go with 14 pitchers and 16 position players. If so, the pitching staff seems about set.

5 starters, Iglesias, Garrett, Stephenson, Lorenzen, Strop, Mahle, Sims, Jones, and likely Cody Reed.

When I was studying the roster choices, this just jumped out at me. And as long as everyone's healthy, when they cut down to 13 pitchers, Mahle will be the one sent out.

Is it an option issue that would keep Sims and send down Mahle? I believe Sims is out of options and Mahle has two. Mahle seems to be the better pitcher, but could be a longer term replacement in the rotation even on the taxi squad.

Basically Yes. They will both fill the same role in the beginning. Long man. After 2 weeks you don't need two of them. (In fact you probably don't need any, as people have said the long man has become a thing of the past). So it's easy to send down Mahle and you can't send down Sims.

I like Sims a lot BTW. Just as much as Mahle. I think Mahle has better stuff but sure seems to lose it in a flash at times.

If Reds keep 16 position players, assuming no trades, figure the final three will be Blandino, Davidson, and Jankowski/Payton.

Jankowski was scratched from lineup tonight so who knows if there’s an injury.

Another possibilty is Reds keep Pena as an extra catcher. Farmer would then be exclusively an infielder.

Roster should be wrapped up soon.

Chances of Pena making the squad are almost non-existent. I think he will be the taxi squad catcher though.

Schebler DFA’d, lefty Raley placed on forty man roster.

Is that it for the Mighty Scheb and the Reds?

Or does he just end up shuffled down to the minors?

Wonder if they will activate Raley. Not sure why they would add him to the forty otherwise. I’m guessing he made the team.

Otherwise could have just re-assigned him to the secondary training site as a minor league player.

If they do activate him, it’s either (a) as 15th pitcher or (b) in place of someone, perhaps Reed another lefty.

mth gets kudos, he’s mentioned Raley as a candidate for the big club in some of his posts.

Brooks Raley spent the last 5 years pitching in Korea and hasn’t pitched in MLB since 2013. Great news for him. #Reds

Raley looks like a guy that is likely to get hit very hard by good hitters.

I'm guessing he's shuffled unless they can trade him for a minor leaguer they want to gamble on. Not sure who would give up anything for him.
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!
