Ask Not for Whom the Bell Tolls. It Tolls for Schebler: 40-man Roster Casualties?

    Who gets the ax?

    Give me your bottom five.

    5. Justin Shafer
Picked up from Toronto cheaply, he's cheap and has a 3.75 ERA across 40 games. His FIP and BB rate are troubling, though, and middle relief arms are typically fungible.

    4. Travis Jankowski
He doesn't hit in the majors-- or at least hasn't yet. He can run and defend on a team that needs both of those off the bench. They spent real money to acquire him, but Akiyama, Senzel, Ervin, and Winker all have experience in CF. How much are extra inning games worth? And how many can he make a difference in?

    3. Mark Payton
Rule V pick has to be sent back to Oakland if he doesn't make the roster. LH OF are plentiful, and he's unlikely to have much of a role beyond the occasional pinch hitting appearance. Very cheap. Could be productive or a one-year mirage.

    2. Josh D. Smith
Lefty specialist who hasn't been given much of a shot at the major league level. The 'pen is pretty full too, especially with the addition of Nate Jones.

    1. Scott Schebler
Expensive (relatively) and 7th (at best) in the pecking order among OF. Hasn't been given much of a shot to make the major league squad and is out of options. I'd say the writing's on the wall on this one.

Maybe Blandino with the emergence of Farmer at SS.

Flip Shafer and Payton and you have my list. Payton is worth keeping around as a lefty bat who could prove to be a threat off the bench. Shafer hasn't done much to impress and his big league success appears to be smoke and mirrors.

I frequently forget Schebler is still around. Surprises me every time I realize he hasn't been cut. Got to happen some time in the next few days. When it comes, the final accounting on the Todd Frazier trade will not be pretty.

I just think it means he won't be on the 40 man roster any more. No team will claim him and the Reds will keep him on the 60 man roster.

Payton is the only guy on that list that will be lost and its because he's rule 5, not because some team is dying to play an unproven 28 year old rookie.

Glancing at Baltimore's roster, I'd grab him if I was them.

What do they want with a 29 year old guy like that? They are going to have Hays and Mancini in two spots. They have four younger guys who all are Lefty bats or switch hitters. My guess is Anthony Santander, Dwight Smith Jr and DJ Stewart would all be in front of him in line. There are going to be a lot of guys like Schebler going through waivers. If the Reds lose him, somebody else will be available. I know everyone has written Schebler off, but he's head and shoulders above Jankowski, Payton and Powell who most would rather keep. His status shouldn't take priority over keeping the best guys.

Good to hear Mancini back from his cancer treatments.

Even if he's out, what do they want with a 29 year old Schebler. They need to find out about their younger guys.

My picks are easy: Matt Bowman, Justin Shafer, Josh Smith, Scott Schebler, Mark Payton

Bell has tolled, Schebler is DFA’d

#Reds add LHP Brooks Raley to the 40-man roster and designate Scott Schebler for assignment.

I'm assuming Raley had an opt out and they wanted to hang on to him in case Garrett or Reed flame out. I'm guessing he still does not make the 30 initially.
