Who gets the ax?
Give me your bottom five.
5. Justin Shafer
Picked up from Toronto cheaply, he's cheap and has a 3.75 ERA across 40 games. His FIP and BB rate are troubling, though, and middle relief arms are typically fungible.
4. Travis Jankowski
He doesn't hit in the majors-- or at least hasn't yet. He can run and defend on a team that needs both of those off the bench. They spent real money to acquire him, but Akiyama, Senzel, Ervin, and Winker all have experience in CF. How much are extra inning games worth? And how many can he make a difference in?
3. Mark Payton
Rule V pick has to be sent back to Oakland if he doesn't make the roster. LH OF are plentiful, and he's unlikely to have much of a role beyond the occasional pinch hitting appearance. Very cheap. Could be productive or a one-year mirage.
2. Josh D. Smith
Lefty specialist who hasn't been given much of a shot at the major league level. The 'pen is pretty full too, especially with the addition of Nate Jones.
1. Scott Schebler
Expensive (relatively) and 7th (at best) in the pecking order among OF. Hasn't been given much of a shot to make the major league squad and is out of options. I'd say the writing's on the wall on this one.
