New cases of polio linked to the oral vaccine have been reported in four African countries and more children are now being paralysed by vaccine-derived viruses than those infected by viruses in the wild, according to global health numbers.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and partners identified nine new cases caused by the vaccine in Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic and Angola last week. Along with seven other African countries with outbreaks, cases have also been reported in Asia. In Afghanistan and Pakistan polio remains endemic, and in Pakistan officials have been accused of covering up vaccine-related cases.

In many ways, lockdowns are an artifact of privilege. The policies of social distancing that have become ubiquitous and familiar to us all are underpinned by certain assumptions about our society and the way it operates. Our supermarkets will not run out of produce. We don’t have to think twice about the water we use to wash our hands. We will be paid for remote work. And, in cases where those conditions are not met, our government will step in and provide assistance. That is the idea, at least.
In many parts of the developing world, however, these assumptions could not be further from the truth. In Sub-Saharan Africa, 70 percent of the population works in the informal economy and many need to work every day to put food on the table. Without a buffer of savings or the ability to store large amounts of food for weeks on end, they are wholly reliant on both day wages and a daily trip to the market for survival. Water, too, costs money and, for the 2.1 billion people without access to potable water at home, the only source remains communal wells and water treatment facilities. Washing one’s hands for 20 seconds becomes harder to do when a family has to weigh nourishment against sanitation.
All of this means that for billions around the globe, staying home for even a few days to avoid spreading or contracting the coronavirus is not an option. In these cases, a lockdown becomes a death sentence. And, as African health experts Alex de Waal and Paul Richards explained to BBC, “poor people will prefer the lottery of infection over the certainty of starvation.”

What works spectacularly well is your immune system. Just don't wash so much. It's counter-productive.
How are you dancing around the hundreds of thousands of dead people when you say things like that, man? And the hundreds of thousands more that would die if we took zero precautions to stop this virus (which I’m taking that remark to be implying)?
The Cleveland Clinic has started a trial as of last week. I know 3 people that are doing it. I’m not sure what your definition of wealthy is, but they would be solidly middle class by most standards.
They are being paid a stipend, but it’s also a pretty solid time commitment.
It's incredible that other countries have literally shown us how to do this and we are just too stupid, stubborn, selfish, GREEDY, and arrogant to follow that plan. I really, truly don't even know what to say anymore.
Well Doug, maybe you should listen to Rojo and not wash your hands. Way better advice than all the countries getting through this with minimal damage.
