I will be happy and revel in whatever success the Reds have. Winning the division, winning playoff series, or winning the whole enchilada will be cool.

But I can’t say it will equal a full 162 game season. A lot of what baseball is to me is that it is my constant companion of a 6 month period. All the ups and downs, player stories, and games played paint a rich tapestry. This season will be more of a quick sketch. It won’t have the same impact and clout. And daresay I use this word, but the season feels a little rigged.

But any kind of MLB baseball beats no MLB baseball. And for that I will be grateful and will be a Reds fan for whatever games are played.

How miserable do you have to be as a fan to complain if we win the World Series. "Well....it was only 60 games."

Just win and play the games you can play. Watch baseball and stop crying.

It's 100% legit because every team is facing the same exact challenge. Everyone is on an even playing field. I'd love to hear the arguments against it from teams who don't win the world series, and why their teams were unable to overcome those certain issues when the winning team was able to.

    Were the 1943-1945 seasons legitimate?

The regulation ball had no rubber center
Each roster was affected monthly by roster fluctuation due to the draft /enlistments/players opting to work in industry
Night games increased causing players to have to adjust
Increased DH's caused fatigue and reduced effectiveness

If they have an opening day and a closing day then that's a season, hence it will be legitimate.

1994 is not legitimate, it never ended

If the Reds win the World Series this year, it's going to feel like we just discovered fire and we can stop eating raw meat. After everything people have been through this year, a World Series in 2020 will become everyone's favorite child. Never (in most of our lives) have people needed a dumb reason to celebrate more than now.

With all hope, there will only ever be one Covid-19 shortened season champion, and it would be kind of sweet to have that historical recognition.
My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!

Are the rules going to change in the postseason? Could you imagine a Game Seven in the World Series being tied after nine innings, and the winning run scores in the tenth, because a player that didn't officially reach base starts the inning on second?

    Season champion is legitimate.

If someone hits .400, not legitimate.

    Regular season will be:
over 3 times longer than an NFL season
more than 1 1/2 times longer than the EPL
1 1/2 times longer than an NCAA Mens Basketball season
A few games shy of what NCAA top baseball teams play
3/4 the length of regular hockey and basketball seasons

It seems long enough to sort things out and be legit.

What makes baseball unique from other sports is that it has a long season where everyone plays everyone else in their league multiple times, home and away. This gives the season the truest test of who the better teams are.

All the other sports seasons are shorter, so luck plays a much bigger role, and the playoffs are where the meaningful games are played. Baseball this season is now like all other sports.

Technically it's 3.1 PA/g, so for 60 games, a qualifying number of PAs is 186.

That said, any records set this season will certainly come with some sort of disclaimer. Heck, look at Gwynn in '94 when he was batting nearly .400. Even that seems like an incomplete season and they played more than twice as many games.

That's not how it works. It is 3.1 plate appearance times the number of game's the team plays. In 1994, they list Tony Gwynn as the batting champ. He only had 475 PA. In 1981, they list Bill Madlock as the batting champ. He only went to the plate 320 times. The Pirates played 102 games in '81. 102 * 3.1 = 316. And so Madlock qualified. If the 502 PA are set in stone, Ozzie Smith (509 PA) led the N.L. in batting with a .222 average.

The 1919 world championship is tainted because the Sox through the Series, but the Reds didn't get the opportunity to win it outright. They get the championship but its tainted through no fault of their own. The Reds 2020 world championship may be ridiculed by some as an outlier but at least they won if fairly and squarely against others who wanted it.
