what is the point of having a 60-man pool of players then? if they were never going to use more than 40 total, why the need for the other 20? it's just stupid. the cardinals haven't played in two weeks. take the guys on the regular roster who have tested negative for the virus, pair them with some of the "JV" guys as you said, and play ball.
did MLB pause the reds' season when it was believed the reds had three guys with the virus (davidson, moose and senzel, even though none of them ended up having it because our testing in this country is garbage)? nope, absolutely not. reds had to carry on. i know the cardinals had more than 3 guys infected, but the point remains.

I am with the group that thinks the Cards should makeup what they can and forfeit the rest. This has always been the rule of thumb. Injuries, illness, life problems, etc. have always been a burden of the players and team, not the league. Virus or no virus you can't alter this long-standing principle without the MLB treading into a world of murky value judgements.

The Cardinals played six DH's from 9/10/1944 to 9/21/1944, they went 4-8, but were already leading the league by 15+ games
I know there's a lot of pages in this thread, but it's been explained multiple times by multiple posters as to the point of a 60-man player pool.
And I've also explained in this thread why the Reds were treated differently than the teams that had actual, real outbreaks and spread.

Cardinals get a bunch of games that are 7 innings long, seems fair eh?

Any team that can’t play all games due to COVID on their team should be assessed loses for those games. Any team that was prepared to play that day but the other team had Covid and couldn’t play 60 due to that should not be assessed losses. However, if Unplayed games for those teams that didn’t play 60, but are not penalized factor into making the playoffs or not, those games should be required to be made up.
It’s hard to say if this will be an advantage overall, an disadvantage or have little effect.
You’re correct playing a bunch of 7 inning games is an advantage. But playing a bunch of doubleheader’s is a disadvantage. And the long layoff could be a disadvantage. It will be an interesting experiment, and should be fun to analyze afterwards.

To provide a hypothetical real world spin on this: Major League Baseball teams travel by air. What would a Major League Baseball team's business continuity plan be if the team plane went down and the entire team was wiped out? Would they just wait for those players to rise from the dead before resuming play, since replacing an entire Major League roster with the players in their minor league system was never the plan?
My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!
https://www.sbnation.com/2011/9/8/24...-disaster-plan
From the 1960's
Under the N.L. arrangement, if an accident deprives one club of seven or more players, each of the other nine teams will make available a list of 12 players from their 25-man rosters. The stricken club may then pick its replacements from this group, with a limit of two players from one club. If an entire team should be lost, the remaining seven players would have to be obtained from the minors or by purchases. The cost of each player drafted under the disaster plan was set at $100,000. However, a $2,500,000 insurance fund was provided at a cost of $2,000 per club per year.
