Option 4, he opts out, Reds add a few mil per year and he stays.

The better question is...can he pitch?

So yeah he stays, but not necessarily for the reasons you provided there.
If he mashes enough, any team might give him more $$ than the Reds and plan on DHing him at least half the time. At the end of the day, money talks. If both leagues have a DH, it has more value positionally.
Would a team rather have a monster DH for big money or a monster hitting/mediocre to terrible defense RF for big money?

Since there are no teams on the moon, I guess South Korea's far enough from Cincinnati to satisfy me.

Yeah. He may stay, but there's always going to be a LAD or LAA or NYY or NYM who can pony up and won't be afraid to do so.

Castellanos consistently grades out at about a -1.5 to -2.5 dWAR guy a year. There's a reason why we were able to sign him for $16M a year....he was just as hot last year for the Cubs than he has been this year.

Uncertainty doesn’t affect them meaningfully. If one of those teams needs him, they’ll get him.

And either way I doubt teams are going to drastically change their evaluation of him based on a 2 month sample size.

That's close to what I'm thinking. His contract pays him 16 Mill in 2020, 2022 and 2023. In 2024 it jumps to 20 million. But in 2021 it's only 14 million. I think the Reds offer him 2-3 million to not exercise his 2021 option. He gets a little something, Reds keep him for 2021 and he can still opt out for 2022 in a more normal market.

if he remains on the trend he has been on over the last week, the Reds will likely hope he opts out

    Re: Will Castellanos stay?

Doesn't he have a second season opt out as well? My money would be on him staying this off season due to the clear uncertainty that is going to exist this year, and then seeing what the market looks like in the 2021 off season.

    Re: Will Castellanos stay?

That 2nd opt out may see him deciding to go one more year before hitting the market again. Money is going to be tighter for 2021. Play another year in Cincinnati then take his opt out

    Re: Will Castellanos stay?

He’ll be a year older and potentially a year more in decline if he goes for the second opt out. If he doesn’t bolt this offseason, he’ll probably just stay with this contract. IMO.
