Various tweets this morning say Castellanos did not opt out. Sheldon, Rosecrans.

    He’s back.

Now need the NL to not opt out of the DH.

If NL doesn’t adopt the DH next season it’s a personal affront to the Reds. Reds should petition for multiple DHs.

Glad Cast is back, with some small adjustments he’ll rake next year. Quality bat.

Next step should be a QO for Bauer in a day or two.

Isn’t Shogo a clear 4th OF at this point though- even without DH?

This was correct. Castellanos did nothing, and he is still a Red. From Nightengale:

Nick Castellanos, as expected, did not inform the #Reds that he planned to opt out. He will return in 2021.

Reds expected to extend Trevor Bauer a qualifying offer by the deadline tomorrow.

A .357 OB and Gold Glove nomination would argue he's a starting player.

I suspect Reds are not where I'm at....but Senzel is the clear 4th to me. And a candidate to possibly see some AAA time.

My take on Senzel is they've got to determine whether he's going to bust out in 2021 before it happens, and they've got to be right about it. If he can be a version of what they hoped he'd be, then he's what the team needs in the lineup. If they don't think he's going to be that (or that it's always going to be something with him and injuries), then move him while he's still a valuable trade chip. So, I'd rather see him traded than turned into a supporting player. I do wonder if he'd find his bat better if they moved him back to the IF.

    Re: Will Castellanos stay?

With the DH the starting OF is likely Shogo, Senzel, and Castellanos. Winker is the DH.

Without the DH, they either rotate all four of them in the OF, or somebody gets traded.

Neither Senzel nor Shogo is a fourth OFer with this group because defensively Reds won’t regularly use Winker and Castellanos in the same starting OF.

I suspect you're right. If so, Goodwin becomes an expensive but valuable fourth OF or will be non-tendered. I'm expecting him to be non-tendered, personally.

I hope not. He's not going to cost all that much (~$3M) and it's entirely conceivable he could get regular playing time.

    Totally.

But if the Reds are going to be as penurious as other teams (and that's likely), he's as good as gone.

(Not that I want him gone. I like a league average or better guy as a fourth OF.)

No way they non-tender Goodwin. They knew the deal for 21 going into that trade. He was brought in as 21 depth just as much as he was to bolster the stretch run in covid season.

Eh, I don’t know. A sub .300 SLG has a hard time cracking my starting OF unless he’s truly a young Andrew Jones with the glove, and even then...

If he was a SS it might be a different story, but even Ozzie Smith consistently slugged above .300
