Of course my oldest is 9 right now. Hoping the Reds give her some of that magic this year.
I had never heard that adage. It really applies though, wow.

But I can specifically point to when I was around 9-11 for the 93-95 seasons as the first I really followed the Reds any. I was still a casual of course. I didn't really start following them until the early 00s when I was in college.

I did see for the playoffs that they will not be using the runner on second for extra innings rule. The DH is still in effect and I forget what else was mentioned.

These are our magic numbers against each team:
    Brewers 2
    Phillies 2
    Giants 3

So should we go 0/3 this weekend, the brewers would need to lose 2/4, phillies lose 2/3, giants 3/4. We would need 2 of those scenarios to happen to get in

Essentially win a game and it would be awfully hard for the Reds not to be in.

    Re: 2020 Playoff Push

So I’m 32 years old and would say I have had some comprehension of fandom and understanding of what was going on since I was 7.

So we have a chance here this weekend for me to see the Reds above 500 for the 6th time, and make the playoffs outright for the 3rd time (with 2 wild card play-in losses as well).

Incredibly sad history here, but I’m pumped for the possibility. Heck I don’t even need the above 500, I will just take the playoff spot.

I think 1972 may be an underlying reason behind a lot of anger I've had later in life. Joe Rudy, Sal Bando, Rollie Fingers, my grandmother's distrust of men with facial hair. I was 7, Brooks Robinson had ripped my 5 year old heart to pieces and I was ready to hate all things Oakland after that '72 series.
But then the Rattlesnake and Fred Biletnikoff, Jack Tatum and that old guy Blanda turned me into a Raiders fan soon after.
    It was complicated.

I was a Raider fan then too... but the 1975 Bengals stole my heart and I have been cursing that ever since

My very first baseball game I attended in person was game 2 of the 1972 World Series. I was 6. Joe Rudi is still the MLB player I hate the most.

Funny thing, I actually likes the A’s overall, they were the AL version of the Reds so I respected them. I also liked all the craziness of Charlie Finley. My favorite cap as a kid was an A’s cap I wore nearly every day all of 7th and 8th grade.

You really wouldn't have believed the guy the Reds hired as the heads of the groundscrew for that year. THAT was the most entertaining part of the 1996 season. You were 10, so you were likely significantly more mature than that guy.

Heard on WVXU today regarding playoff chances:

    https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0131857...ters/nm0562812

Kenny Mayne : So, if the Beers beat Detroit and Denver beats Atlanta in the American Southwestern Division East Northern, then Milwaukee goes to the Denslow Cup, unless Baltimore can upset Buffalo and Charlotte ties Toronto, then Oakland would play LA and Pittsburgh in a blind choice round robin. And if no clear winner emerges from all of this, the two-man sack race will be held on consecutive Sundays until a champion can be crowned

Bauer would once again be on short rest so the odds are against him for a quality start especially going against an AL team. I still don't trust Castillo even though he's pitched well lately. Also the offense outside of hitting homeruns is non-existent. They won't have as much of that luxury on the road.

Mahle is going to show us the stud he is tonight and take a lot of the pressure off for the rest of the weekend.

That would be the best case scenario. Win tonight and the weekend can be a little dull. I will note that one of my reasons for liking Mahle going way back is he always seemed to be the sort who wants the ball. Tonight he gets the chance to make good on that. Biggest game of his career.
