    Epic songs

What are some songs you all consider to be "epic"?

    A few of mine:

    November Rain - GNR
    The End - The Doors
Pull Me Under - Dream Theater
    Achilles Last Stand - Zeppelin
    The Odyssey - Symphony X

I'll also add Hendrix performing The Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock, even though that's just a few minutes long.
Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. -- Carl Sagan (Pale Blue Dot)

It is on the whole probable that we continually dream, but that consciousness makes such a noise that we do not hear it. Carl Jung.

    A few classics:

    Hey Jude
    We Don't Get Fooled Again/Baba O'Reilly
    Ramblin' Man

And one you don't hear nearly enough these days:

It is on the whole probable that we continually dream, but that consciousness makes such a noise that we do not hear it. Carl Jung.

Expand on what makes a Song "Epic." I think all the ones listed are, but there are a lot of great song that might not be considered Epic I suppose. I'll throw out a safe one and say Bohemian Rhapsody.

Here is one that isn't as much a classic

Bruce Springsteen "The Ghost of Tom Joad" The live version with Tom Morello.

Chambers Brothers - Time has come today.

I agree with Achilles Last Stand. My favorite Zeppelin song.

Springsteen is not epic. Springsteen is a great performer and an soulful empathic man, but that is different from epic.
Wagner, Mahler, Beethoven, Sibelius, Bruckner are epic.
If I had to pick one piece - Also sprach Zarathustra by Richard Strauss.
Close second: 3rd movement of Beethoven’s string quartet in A minor, Op. 132 - titled “Holy song of thanks to the godhead from a convalescent, in the Lydian mode”. He wrote this masterpiece without ever hearing the notes. He was deaf. It is the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth in1770.

If I’m going to pick an epic Springsteen song, it would be Jungleland. Not just an epic song, but an epic story.

Roy Bittan and Max Weinberg, Bruce’s keyboardist and drummer, also played keyboard and drums on Meatloaf’s Bat Out of Hell. They said that Jim Steinman who wrote Bat Out of Hell, loved Jungleland and it was partial inspiration for the sound of the album, one of the reasons why he had them on the album.

Jungleland is the perfect epic. You begin with a story featuring distinct characters, move them forward with dense lyrics and dramatic music, don't be afraid to go long, and build to a crescendo, which the song does both vocally and instrumentally. Springsteen's anguished scream at the end tears the listener to pieces.

    Re: Epic songs

I grew up on ska punk and indie rock, so these sorts of “best of” topics are always interesting. Classic rock definitely seems to be the prioritized genre, with maybe blues and jazz placed just behind, but the only bands I went back to enjoy are more college/art rock stuff like R.E.M. and Talking Heads. I have a soft spot for cheesy classic rock like Van Halen and B-52s. I also consume most of my music on headphones as a solitary activity and the last time I experienced new music as part of a community or society was ‘90s grunge and alt-rock like Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Rage Against the Machine, etc.

This is all to say that the most epic songs for me are outside of the main genres for epic songs. About Today by the National feels like an epic song. The Glow Pt 2 by the Microphones is an all-time epic song. Phil Elvrum’s new Mount Eerie album ‘Microphones in 2020’ is a 45 minute song that is pretty epic. But it feels like part of the definition of ‘epic’ is it needs to be a huge song that is prominent in its era’s zeitgeist and that most strangers could recall easily...can a smaller indie song that never captivated a bar of strangers in every town of the country be epic?

Beethoven's 9th Symphony ranks up there with me as somewhat epic.
