So maybe just maybe Shogo can hit!

I have been impressed with him lately and found this on the Enquirer website.

    https://www.cincinnati.com/story/spo...el/5808231002/

Akiyama looks like a different hitter than he did last month. He ranks fourth in the Majors in the month of September with a .489 on-base percentage. The three hitters above him, Mike Trout, Freddie Freeman and Jeff McNeil, were All-Stars last year.

I think Dick Williams made at least one good move this winter.
    Tim McCarver: Baseball Quotes
I remember one time going out to the mound to talk with Bob Gibson. He told me to get back behind the batter, that the only thing I knew about pitching was that it was hard to hit.

It's funny to me that he points to the hit off Darvish because I feel like a lot of guys will say they started clicking a few games or many games before it shows up in the stat line. but for Shogo it really was right after he had bottomed out in an 0-5 effort that left him with a .495 OPS going into that game against Darvish. Ever since he's been fantastic.

And hey even with his bad struggles early on he's out-OPSing Shohei Ohtani, Jose Altuve, and Javier Baez on the season at the moment.

Shogo quit listening to somebody, and started listening to someone else.

Like night and day. Love it.

I'm shocked that a guy in his first season in a new country playing in a new league took some games to get adjusted.

Based on the number of games played, we would normally be entering Memorial Day Weekend.

The assumptions earlier based on extremely small sample sizes were crazy to read. You'd think it was the internet that I was looking at.

Re: So maybe just maybe Shogo can hit!

Welch said on the broadcast last night that when Shogo first got here, he was concerning himself with launch angle and bat speed, but that wasn't working for him so he went back to just trying to drop it in shallow outfield.

And they can't shift on him because he sprays it everywhere.

I'm sure part of Shogo's slump was due to getting acclimated. I'll buy that. But the change was night and day, and last night Welch told us why.

Other slumping Reds should take note. Maybe don't swing so hard that you fall down when you miss, and just try to put a good bat on the ball?

Except Winker. It looked like it kinda worked for him.

Yes but he speaks very good English, so it wouldn't have been a problem.

Parenthetical note: I think the quality of the commentating in Reds games seems to have ticked up. What has changed? Hmmmm, let me think.....

It appears that the Reds in general are attacking early pitches that are in the middle of the strike zone more and just trying to make contact with 2 strikes rather than swinging out of their shoes. I am assuming the coaching staff has changed their hitting philosophy as of lately.

They are so much more loose. The atmosphere seems to be more jovial, although I think that's just a side effect of Jim Day being there. Everybody seems to like that guy.

I honestly think his play by play skills aren't even that good. But Welsh and Cowboy have seemingly stepped up their game since Thom left (they've been quite good imo), and I think both Lecure and Graves have been a plus.

Re: So maybe just maybe Shogo can hit!

Yeah that whole broadcast team now. So much more loose. No other explanation, it has to be because Thom is gone.

At first I was thinking, wow strange coincidence that Lecure, Day, Welch have such good chemistry. Then Brantley did a few and it was the same. Then Graves did a few and it was the same as well.

It was Thom. I think he deserves another chance. Somewhere else. Maybe NFL. The Reds are better off without him in the booth.

Back to the original topic. Yes, perhaps the swing out of your shoes approach works for Winker. But as a team philosophy, it does far more harm than good. Just look at the results. Yuk. Shogo figured it out. Quite a few others need to follow suit.
