It’s a big problem to use slumping players at this stage unless there’s some reason to believe they are ready to contribute now. Same issue with DeSclafani, either he’s ready to pitch well or he’s not.

Up to the coaching staff to decide, but this isn’t the time to work on performance issues.
You just don't bench guys when they go through slumps like this. They need to play otherwise IF they Reds do make the playoffs they still don't have the ABs they need. Managers show confidence in the players to work through this. DeSclafani is a different issue. We know Winker and Senzel will hit. DeSclafani has not shown much all year.

I think you just have to play your best players, regardless of who has been hot or cold over the past week or two weeks. You can't really predict who will be hot or cold, so your best bet is to roll with the best guys.

I think.Johnny Bench.slumped most of 1976 but he had a pretty good World Series.

No, I'm not comparing those guys to Bench. Just saying...

Maybe Goodwin, but he is bad in CF. Even so, he will probably get his playing time when the matchups are right.

I probably just play Senzel so that he gets back to playing speed. He was hitting well before he went on the DL, and it wasn't really an injury he has to play with.
Senzel that was pretty bad in center field too. I'm not saying you shouldn't play about everyday but he definitely is not in there for his defense

I think to a large extent Winker suffers from time off although he cooled off before sitting due to back ailment. LOVE to see both start to hit. This offense can do some damage if it can only get going.
Winkers biggest problem lately is it's tough to hit the ball when you have one knee on the ground when you swing

Sure is, no argument there. He was going so good until that mighty swing popped up. Players go through this. Votto, Castellanos, Suarez, Moustakas all have slumped this year at some point. Winker has to figure this out and get back on track.

Watching Winker swing and miss looks like someone popping a balloon with a nail gun.

Ease it back a notch or three, there, Babe Ruth.
He said he was curious about the crowd but didn’t want to stay and talk. “I’m heading out,” he said. “This is a super-spreader event.”

I thought Senzel looked good in CF and at the plate before the virus took him out.

And I have confidence he’ll be one of the better bats moving forward. I think Bell will give Goodwin plenty of chances, not worried about that. But Goodwin, Farmer and Galvis should not be getting many starts from here out.

Senzel had adjusted well from last year to this in CF. 4 errors last year and one this year albeit a small sample size no doubt.

Yes Senzel will hit. There are 9 games left and the Reds must win 5. How many games do you give Senzel to work thru it? I’d platoon him now with Goodwin until he shows signs of life.

That would not be my philosophy with players who miss long stretches due to injury; or who’ve been in a deep slump for weeks.

It’s up to the coaches to watch them in games and in practice and form a view whether a player is equipped to perform well right now - generally and in particular match ups.

In a do-or-die situation you just don’t blithely go by the name on the jersey, long-term potential, or track record from the past. You also look at the current status of the player. There’s no tomorrow.

He shouldn’t. Goodwin should play over Senzel. Aquino isn’t a centerfielder. But we’ve been over this before.

If you insist on comparing those two, Goodwin has an OPS 100 points higher than Aquino this year.

Play Senzel each game through ChiSox series and see how that goes.
