You are correct, I am not sure what I was looking at, maybe 2019 by mistake. But if that is the case, then my point is even stronger. They really didn’t generate much more offense in these last 15 games. The winning streak was generated mostly by allowing nearly 2 fewer runs a game (mostly because of the pen).

If you go back to the 15th game of the season and compare Reds final numbers -

    1. Starting pitching ERA from 2.30 to 3.84.

    2. Offense went from .697 OPS to .715 OPS.

    3. Bullpen ERA from 7.24 ERA, 5.55 FIP, to 4.53 ERA and 4.64 FIP. Bullpen finished at 13-7 W-L.

There were ups and downs over the season, but the Reds improvement was, modestly in offense, and dramatically in bullpen. IMO the current team over a full season should be over .500.

    Billy Beane once said
“My job is to get us to the playoffs"
“What happens after that is f****ing luck.”

I'd say that quote might work for David Bell as well.

i've railed against bell all season. but the bottom line is he led this team to the playoffs, which was the goal for the regular season. he did his job.

we will know a lot more about david bell when Year 3 of his reds' managerial career is in the rear view mirror following the 2021 season. but he has without question earned another season and i would love to be wrong about the man. i would love for the reds to have a good manager. maybe bell is just that.

Joey Votto on David Bell: "He comes off as quiet, as more neutral, but he's a very intense, very competitive man. I feel like the more you get to know him, the more you feed off of that."

Managers that get a team that has been mired sub-500 for years above .500 and in the post-season aren't fired. How many years was Bryan Price here again? LOL

So correct me if I'm wrong - no issues there - but it appears to me, from these numerous thread discussions on this manger, those that have the biggest beef with Bell, even want him fired, are the analytics folks (for the most part). And David Bell is an analytics guy. Now granted, he may be a novice at it (not sure), needs more experience, but he's sold on it.

So is it his approach, his "application" of those analtical principles, during the game?

I'm not sure he's an analytics guy at all. Substituting guys who would be in the minor leagues if not for the expanded rosters for his main players and some of his early bullpen choices were terrible decisions. He seemed to become less "spastic" about making moves for just the sake of making moves as the season wore on, but he contributed to creating the early hole. I also didn't like the way he escalated things in the game against the Cubs, which resulted in both Votto and Winker being ejected. He needs to maintain order, not instigate chaos. That was what lost me. He seemed a lot like he was trying to prove he was smarter than everyone else with his "off the wall" moves and in the process he proved he's quite the opposite to me.

I'm usually ambivalent about the Manager because I think the GM/front office do the heavy lifting, the players win and lose and the Manager doesn't make much difference. Throughout most of the season, Bell made a difference, just not the right kind IMO. I've been a fan since the Dave Bristol days, and Bell is the first one I can remember actually wanting to see get fired. Not Bryan Price, not Vern Rapp, not Dave Miley, not Ray Knight (well maybe Ray Knight), not even Bob Boone, but Bell, well, he'll be back now for sure, I hope he figures it out. Maybe the last 15 games show he has.
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!

They are all analytic today, count on it, the numbers being generated by the front office don't end up in the circular filing cabinet

As for the later, I've seen that same statement applied to Stengel, Weaver, LaRussa too. Not bad company

Open up an NC-17 board and I'll be happy to tell you what David Bell needs.

I'll blame him for pinch hitting in the 7th and stupid double steal. Other than that it's totally on the hitters
