I’m amazed Gibson did not win 300 to be so dominant. I was looking over his carrer stats. It is mind blowing that he lost 9 in that 1.12 season of 1968 and had several 11-13 loss seasons with a sub 3 ERA.
Were the other NL pitchers that dominant in that era, or did he suffer from poor run support a little of both?
I was a kid when he retired in 75, so I need a historical perspective and opinion from those who lived it...
I wound up reading about Bob Gibson on Wikipedia last night after searching for Bob Howsam. His time with The Cardinals made mention of Gibson (funny how internet rabbit holes work) and then I forget what.
It must have literally been an hour or so before the news broke.

Not related to baseball, but kind of the same thing as this post. I was listening to Sirius over internet one night and a Fats Domino song came on that I wasn't familiar with and it sounded so good I went to youtube and spent hours listening to other songs of his I wasn't familiar with. In between I went to wikipedia to see how long he'd been dead and was shocked that he was still alive. Got bed about 4am. Woke about 10 am and one of the news feeds reports Fats Domino had just died that morning.
I think this one will go 7.... :-)

Back in the 60's and 70's, every club -- even the worst ones -- had at least one starting pitcher that you hoped you missed when your team would play against them in a three-game or four-game series. Because no matter how bad that team might be, when that guy pitched they were capable of beating anyone.
