Another underslot that is more likely to fall to the Reds at 17 is Gunnar Hoglund, who is having Tommy John surgery.

If you told me Reds wanted Bubba to go both ways. I'd be all for him. But I doubt Reds are that bold. And the new drafting regime has not drafted HS pitchers in first couple rounds. So I think they either think of him as hitter, or they go elsewhere.

That power is absolutely real, though.
In this draft at 17 it doesn't look like we're picking anyone without some big criticism.
Of everyone I've read about, I'm going Painter, Hoglund, Fabian right now (assuming some much better player doesn't fall and we pick them up ala Singer with the Royals a few years back).
I'd also like to point out that in addition to Tommy Mace, we've picked Ryan Cusick before as well.

17. Cincinnati Reds: Matt Mikulski, LHP, Fordham
Mikulski had a brief dip for a few weeks but has been strong down the stretch, and would allow the Reds to go below slot here (he’s a senior) and then go well over at their two extra picks, 30 and 35.30. Cincinnati Reds: Maddux Bruns, LHP, UMS-Preparatory (MS) High School
Bruns has some of the best stuff in the high school class, but his control was so bad last summer that he had a long way to go to get back up into first-round territory. The Reds showed two years ago they’ll swing for the fences when they have extra picks, and Bruns’ upside is as good as that of any prep arm this year.
Well, that's what those words mean. He was here. If they don't keep him, he will have been lost/subtracted. I headed out the door today with two shoes on my feet. If I don't return with them, I have lost them. If I do return with them, I haven't added them. ---M2
That law mock would be worst case scenario in my eyes. Yuck.
What would you say.....ya do here?

Don't mind the strategy with Mikulski but not sure Bruns is the guy I want to be targeting for it. Jay Allen would be better if they can get him there.

New mock draft from MLB.com posted yesterday
17. Reds: Andrew Painter, RHP, Calvary Christian Academy (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.)
The Reds could consider a number of high school players here -- from Bubba Chandler to Chase Petty on the mound to Joe Mack and Harry Ford behind the plate -- but we’ll give them the big right-hander from Florida this week.

I can't see them taking a high school arm in the first round. That's especially the case if they plan to go over slot at 30/35.

Agreed. (Unless, of course, they can sign a kid who's profiled to be drafted much lower for a bargain price.) A Payton Stoval, for example, profiles to be a late first round/ high 2nd round guy right now. He's got a 55 or 60 hit tool but questions about his defensive position. (Sounds similar to Callihan from 2019.) They could pop on him for a lower-than-expected-slot price. That said, I expect that they'll go with Gunnar Hoglund or Jaden Hill and rehab for the year. That's upside, risk, and a bonus cap all in one.
That would allow for (relatively) big bonuses at 30 and/or 35.

Who do you hope the Reds avoid in the draft.
This year is so much a crapshoot-- much moreso than most, IMO. Upside aplenty but questions too.
At 17, I'm hoping they avoid Jud Fabian (though I'd be fine with gambling on him at 35). Bubba Chandler is another guy I'm less sure about.
17 feels like a good place to take a chance on a high upside prep pitcher. Painter fits that profile.
