Re: Redsí Search for D. Williamsí Replacement

I gotta jump in here. Seeing a C Trent post caught my eye.

On 10/1 Trent posted a “look at me I’m deleting Twitter from my phone video” saying he would be taking a break from it.

But that really never happened it seems.

Re: Redsí Search for D. Williamsí Replacement

“I’m going to answer to Bob now instead of Dick. Not a ton [changes] from a day-to-day standpoint. Just will be more of the head of the department and the person who will make the final decision for this department to take to Bob.”

The last three seasons, Krall has been the GM and worked alongside Williams. He was highly involved in player acquisitions, contract negotiations, arbitration and has overseen the scouting, analytics and player development departments.

That included the trades for pitchers Sonny Gray and Trevor Bauer in 2019 and the offseason signings of free agents Mike Moustakas, Nick Castellanos and Shogo Akiyama.

Reds manager David Bell and the coaching staff will return in 2021, Krall said, and no significant changes were expected in the rest of the front office this winter.

Here are some items on Krall’s agenda heading into the winter:

    • Improve an offense that was ranked last in the Major Leagues with a .212 average during the regular season.

“We’ve got to figure out ways to put guys in a better position to succeed or be able to have guys use the whole field and take advantage of when a shift is out there,” Krall said. “There’s a lot of different things you can do, but it’s something that we have definitely talked about over the last couple weeks.”

    • The Reds might need to replace two free-agent starting pitchers in Bauer and Anthony DeSclafani. Krall did not rule out bringing both players back, but Bauer is likely every club’s top free agent on the board this offseason.

“He’s [a] top, front-end-of-the-rotation [arm] that, in my opinion, should win the [National League] Cy Young Award this year. I think you’d love to try to get him back if there’s any way possible,” Krall said.

The club is still figuring out how it will maximize its budget after a pandemic season where fans could not attend games at Great American Ball Park. There is still uncertainty about what the 2021 season could look like.

“We made the playoffs, but that's not your ultimate goal,” Krall said. “Your goal in this role is to build a sustainable championship-caliber organization that can win World Series for years to come. It's always going to be your goal. We were excited to make the postseason, not excited how it ended.

“We need to figure out how to continue to push forward and move past where we were, and hopefully next year at this time we'll be continuing to be playing. That's always the goal.”

He oversaw the entire baseball operations landscape, he handled big picture and long term planning of the organization from a baseball standpoint, for the most part he was also the "face" of the organization - something plenty of President's of Baseball Operations are these days (Theo, for example, in Chicago - he's not the GM there, he's the President of Baseball Ops - Jed Hoyer is and has been the GM of the Cubs for nearly a decade now). And if we are to believe what everyone says, including Nick Krall this afternoon, Williams was the final say on baseball decisions before they took those decisions to Bob Castellini.

I LIVE on twitter. It's a real problem. I use twitter on my phone for MAYBE an hour each month. Deleting twitter from your phone doesn't mean you aren't on twitter.

    Good to see.

I suspect they'll feel out whether the guys will actually bunt in that situation.

    Of course.

Now Redszone is no Twitter and i certainly am no C. Trent, but it would look pretty silly if i posted a video showing me deleting Tapatalk from my phone saying I am taking a break, yet I just continued to post from my computer.

In all seriousness a break from social media is good for anyone, but I wonder if his dark overlords at The Athletic require him to keep tweeting.

Given that The Athletic built there own in-app "tweeting" kind of thing, I highly doubt it. As someone that The Athletic used to pay to write for them (granted I wasn't an employee, just contractor for a year) - I never once had them ask me to do anything like tweet, engage the audience, push the stories, or anything else like that. Granted that was like 2 years ago, and things clearly could have changed..... but I don't think that someone at The Athletic would be pushing that kind of thing.

Here's my two cents on deleting the app from your phone: It means you aren't checking twitter when you aren't "at work". It means you aren't getting notifications on your phone from twitter (I turned this off a long time ago - I only get DM notifications now). There's a definite "break taking" when you only open up tweetdeck, or whatever, when you are sitting at the computer and doing your work versus having it available at all times, and potentially reaching you at all times because it's on your phone and blowing up.

Sure, until they decided they needed somebody better at baseball and elevated Krall. Clearly that move wasn't made to permanently redefine the organizational structure. Recent events make that look like a pure baseball move.

...or shorten your swing and actually hit the ball the other way. Bunting is certainly not the only option.

Shortening your swing might be more difficult, however.

I've seen it multiple times in these playoffs.

If you make a big show about taking a social media break, then start using it again almost immediately, you may have a problem.
