He could start and give you 6 innings, middle relief and give you 4 innings, set up man with 2 or 3 innings and closer with 1, 2 or 3 innings. With Clay Carroll, you always had a very reliable closer if nobody else stepped up to be that guy. For most of his seasons, someone else did step up to allow us to use Clay Carroll in all other roles. But there was a year or two where he was the only one.
My sister and I met Clay Carroll in 2016 before a Reds game. Great guy. I told him he was a big part of the Big Red Machine. He politely said Thank You.
His wife was very cool also. Super memory!

Scott Bankhead and Bip Roberts both had amazing years in 1992.

I know, but if you do it without me watching, it didn't happen lol

I had the same feeling for Frank Ryan of the Browns. I started following them in 1968 also and when he came in to QB, he was awful. Then to find out he led the Browns to their (STILL) last championship in 1964 surprised me.

Clay Carroll’s second wife’s son wounded Clay and killed his wife and his stepdaughter, how awful is that?
When I see the 2016 Reds, I see a 100 loss team and no direction.

Ernie Lombardi went to McClymonds H.S. That should sound familiar to Reds fans. Vada Pinson, Frank Robinson and Curt Flood (once a Red) all attended the same school. Joe Abreu was another McClymonds Warrior, and he played briefly for Cincinnati as well in 1942.

Joe Price stood on the mound for 7 years for the Reds. (I'll bet he was tired.) In 226 games, including 75 starts, he registered a 3.56 ERA.

He then seemed to give up bombs every time he pitched the rest of the season. I wanted him gone and apparently so did Howsam as he was let go and he went and got Wayne Granger(sidearmer to replace the submarine pitcher) who became one of my all-time favorites.

And btw, since relief pitchers seem to be prevalent in this topic, the most underrated of all will be John Franco until the Reds put him in their hall of fame.
John Franco is my favorite all time Red.

I don't blame you, he's certainly one of the top on my list and imo the best closer in our history. Nothing made me angrier than when Ron Oester went into the Reds Hall and Franco was left out. I think the franchise holds a grudge that a Brooklyn boy wanted to go back to NY.

Abernathy was called “The Worm”. Here he shows his submarine pitch.

Adam Dunn would give him a run for his money.

I've run into him quite a few times in NYC over the last couple years. Couldn't be a nicer guy.
