That also was the weekend the players had a vote that they were possibly going to sit out Sunday(s) contest because RFK had been killed that week. It had been declared a National Day of mourning and they voted by a slim margin to not play on Friday night, but they also decided that they would follow the direction of the ballclub. The following day Player Rep Milt Pappas, was the leader of that faction that wanted to protest the playing of Saturdays game because the game start was rescheduled due to RFK's funeral and baseball had declared that there would be no games then. Problem is they rescheduled it to to a night game and that broke a MLB rule that no night games could proceed a DH, the protest came to head when Bristol told the team that they were bound to honor the schedule and told the team in the locker-room that he was going to the dugout and they could stay or follow. Rose, Maloney and Helms were the first to go and a trickle of others followed.

This gave Pappas his Clubhouse Lawyer tag and and he claimed that his days in Cincinnati were numbered, even stating, "I hope they are"

He was traded the next day.

Game one starter Steve Carlton was chased in the 4th and then relieved in game two, taking the loss
