the reds trading away 6+ years of didi for 1 year of choo was a disaster any way you want to try and foolishly spin it.
Choo was a 6 win player his one year with the Reds. Didi has never had a single year in his career that was that good. He’s had 2 years where he was a 4+ win player. Aside from that, his production has been completely replaceable. A contending team can always afford to trade off 2 good years for 1 great year of another player.

It’s fair to say that if the Reds had a crystal ball and knew how things turned out they should have went in another direction in the Choo trade. But that’s not how it works.

There are times where you have to trade prospects to get a short term rental in a win-now scenario. If you disagree, fine. But if that’s the case you can never trade prospects for present value because sometimes you are going to get “burnt” in hindsight.

The Reds were coming off one of their best seasons in decades, a heart breaking post season, had a solid, balanced core of position players and pitchers. They were missing a player just like Choo.

It was the perfect time to go for it. If they held on to prospects and didn’t go all in, in 2013, the fans would have revolted.

I'm ok with that. Didi and a guy like Robbie Ray would be enough for me when it comes to the bigger free-agents. There will be a lot of good deals to fill up other holes in the roster and Reds can look to trade guys like Barnhart, Iglesias and possibly Winker to bolster the team.
Since being repeat offenders of the cbt' made the penalties so much worse, Lately even the big market teams have been trying to spend less every couple of seasons.

The unfortunate part of 2013 was Reds declining to make a few more acquisitions, including when Ludwick got hurt.

Choo was a great piece for them, trade made sense, but it’s hard to say they went “all in.”

Particularly on offense, with Votto/Choo getting on base at an incredible pace, team could have been great.
