Our constitution doesn't allow for unilateral decisions that allow chosen "essential workers and businesses" to remain open while not allowing people of faith to gather and worship. It's in our first amendment.
SCOTUS doesn't legislate or say what they want people to do, they rule on the legality of cases. Pandemics don't nullify the constitution or our liberty.

Regarding the 1st amendment there's nothing even remotely controversial about the SCOTUS ruling. Maybe political, but definitely COVID related.
1st protects against discrimination from speech, assembly, association, press, religion, etc. Liberty was never meant to be free.

The discussion about why one would disagree with it could go ten different ways, many of which aren't really COVID related. But hey - not my space to determine what is/isn't allowed. I'm sure someone will step in if boundaries are crossed.
That said, if it were a 9-0 decision, you're right - it wouldn't be controversial. It was 5-4. So there's absolutely some controversy when it's basically split down the middle.
